DS1 having MRI scan to check for torn cartilege on knee

DS1 (11) has to have an MRI scan following a knee injury that hasn't settled.

Does anyone know the answers to the following?

  • if the scan is just for his knee, how long is he likely to be in the tunnel?
  • I have intense claustrophobia - will I be a liability? If he was a toddlerI'd be brave (in the way that you are brave when you have to be) but at 11 I'm not sure.
  • how loud is the noise and should we bring our own noise blocking earphones or do they supply them?

Not sure how long as it depends on several others things - think about 3-40mins. However it will just be his knee in the machine so his head & body will be in the open. I'm pretty sure you will not be able to be in the room with him - happy to be contradicted here. It is loud and your ds will be provided with ear defenders which can have music piped into them, so take an ipod and the radiographers can plug it in.

that's 30-40 mins not 3 mins - that's an egg!

Thank you so much.
I have a Mirena coil fitted which appears on the questionnaire...

Hi scan will be about 30 mins. They will go all the way in the tunnel. Head first normally as that is the configuration for most machines.
If it's being done at a kids hospital the will have a machine with dvd inside.
You will probably not be able to use your own ear phones. But maybe latex ear plugs? It's very noisy. They will provide mri friendly ear phones.
Kids cope well normally x
