DS3 who is 2.5 has suddenly started stammering very badly today. He has no previous problems and had quite advanced speech. A few weeks ago I noticed a slight change I.e a little stammer here or there......

He started two afternoon sessions of preschool a week and has had real problems settling in. He has gotten extremely upset and cried throughout all sessions. I collected him an hour after drop off as he was so upset and had fallen asleep?!? and he was very upset and his stammer started from there and has worsened today.

Can a sudden change be responsible? I don't want to send him back there. It's a lovely preschool - no issues with them but maybe it's that?

He was born with a metopic ridge but has had no surgery as he has had no problems development/health wise and my gp didn't think it was necessary. I am wondering if it is that?

I am very confused and would appreciate some advise please ........

Hi, try not to worry as stammering can be completely normal in this age group. it is likeky that his advanced language and change in routine has triggered it. children's language and brain processing speed develop at different rates and this can cause it to happen. I'm a children's speech and language therapist and I'm happy to give you some advice if you want to message me.
