Toddler diaorrhea in 14m old?

Not sure if she is too young for it to be this but 14mo dd2 has had loose nappies since Sunday (so 5 days now), consistency changed suddenly - nice firm one (sorry) then runny and pale. She isn't ill - hasn't been sick at all, no temperature and v happy in herself. Eating normally, just seems to be going through her faster than usual.

My only concern really is what to do about nursery - she's been off this week as we're on hol but is due back on Mon. I'll tell them all this of course but I know they usually expect children to go home if 3 or 4 loose nappies in a day and this could happen (tho maybe 2 big ones and 2 'follow-throughs' ).

Does anyone have experience of this? plus if it is TD, how tf do we ever go swimming again?

I think it's too early to say it's toddler diarrhoea of only 5 days. Sounds like a tummy bug and you should keep her off nursery.

(Ds1 had TD from 10m- potty trained at 22m)

I also agree that it's a bit early to be thinking TD. 5 days just sounds like a bug. The fact that you say 'faster than usual' suggests that it is unusual. The thing about TD is that loose stools are the default setting.

DS2 had TD. It was a problem with nursery, who kept sending him home and insisting he stayed off for 48 hours. Our GP had to write several letters to them explaining that they should not assume he was ill based on loose nappies alone, and rely on other signs of illness. He also got to eat a nice, low fibre diet.

Swimming wasn't a problem because he wasn't actually ill (so no virus to infect everyone else in the pool with). And he never had a dirty nappy during swimming ever.

Thank you both - yes I realise it's early to be anything definite other than a bug, it just seems like a long time to have a bug and the fact that she hasn't shown any other signs of illness and none of the rest of us have had anything is puzzling so of course I googled, read about TD and it sounded like that.

Out of interest how long did it take to get a TD diagnosis?

That's the kind of problem I was anticipating with nursery but I'll just have to see how she is on Monday and talk to them then.

DD had TD for...I dunno a couple of months anyway? Started just the plane to Spain took off which was lovely...as far as I recall there is nothing to do but wait it out anyway.

Ds had it for about 8 weeks before we had it confirmed.

TD doesn't mean they have constant diarrhoea so things like swimming are fine (and you put a swim nappy on anyway) but any poo is much softer and runnier and has a very distinct smell.

I was just about to post a thread about this but I hope no one minds if I add to this. My 19mo DS has been very loose for about 3 weeks and it's very pale in colour, it actually started out as proper diarrhoea (which he had a few months ago) but it's changed to a different consistency.

5 days is quite early and when DS had a tummy bug the diarrhoea stayed for at least a week after he seemed fine in himself. The GP assured me that this was normal, so it could just be that. He went back to normal after this until now.

My DS is still only going once or twice a day, I'm just worried about the pale colour. When I googled a lot came up about liver problems and bile salts so obviously now I've scared myself. Does it sound like toddler diarrhoea or does anyone think it could be something else. I'd rather not run to my GP with toddler diarrhoea, especially as DS is so well in himself.

Hello blink sorry to reply so late, dd2 went back to normal after 10 days and only missed a few days of nursery so I didn't look at the thread again - must have been a bug, but the most cheerful one I've experienced!

I think at about 3 weeks I would probably see a GP and see what they say. Could be a lingering bug - dd was well in herself throughout - but no harm in getting checked and IME GPs don't mind being asked random questions about young children.

It's a week later now anyway so you've probably already done something!
