Skin infections not responding to antibiotics - any experience?

Dd (9yo) started taking antibiotics on Monday (changed to a different one on Tues due to vomiting) for 2 different skin infections 1. Infected molloscum 2. Infected insect bite. Neither look any better (Thursday night) any experience? Think dd is run down but the antibiotics should still be working by now right? Disclaimer: am taking her back to GP tomorrow.

Which antibiotics is it? Some work better than others.

I took flucloxacillin for my first skin infection in April, which worked, took it again for my second infection in May and had to get another few days of it as 7 days didn't clear it.

This time got clarithromycin.

Might just be trial and error unfortunately but you can ask the docs.

Different infections will respond differently and there can be resistance of bacteria to antibiotics. Back to the GP as you plan. Nothing wrong with a good salt water soak too meantime - level teaspoon of salt to a pint of water.

In addition to the oral antibiotic, are you putting anything on the infected spots? Such as Betadine 3 or 4 times/day and Fucidin cream twice daily? DS2 had a very bad infection on his arm and the GP only gave us the antibiotic, but it still looked horrible after a few days so I took him to a private dermatologist and that is what he gave me

My DD has just experienced something similar. I can totally sympathise OP. Although yes, it's not a serious skin condition mollescum is a right royal PITA. I have been fighting it for 3 years between the 2 DC.

She was given a 5 day course of erythromycin as point blank refused to take flucloxacillin (tastes sooooo rank, I genuinely cannot understand why there isn't a palatable children's antibiotic). After 5 days it really didn't look much better. The GP had said to leave it open and not cover the spot unless it was weeping (which it was so I put manuka honey antiseptic cream on and covered with a breathable dressing). I went back to the nurse yesterday and she said because it now had a scab that it was healing nicely and to just leave it. I think manuka honey antispectic cream is better than the likes of savlon.

(She now has horrible thrush down below though as a side effect from the anti-biotics, it looks so sore).

Is it better now? As mentioned above Fucidin would also help and I believe you can use it alongside an oral anti-biotic.
