Can antibiotics turn my sons teeth yellow?

DS has been on penicillin for a week, 3 more days to go, for scarlet fever.

I noticed the other day his top and bottom teeth we're looking yellow and on closer inspection they look stained round the gums.

Can the antibiotics be causing this and is it permanent? This is the only time he's been on antibiotics and he's 20mo

not in the way you describe. You need to brush more thoroughly though. Is the medication yellow?

I met a lady with green teeth the other day so I have been reading up on this.

It takes extended period of dosage & specific antiBs to turn teeth colour caused by antiBs, and then they would grow in that colour, iyswim. Staining them permanently isn't how it works.

Sounds like yellow amoxycillin staining the plaque on his teeth yellow. I'd try more thorough brushing

Thanks everyone if it's just plaque and I can do something about it that makes me a lot happier

My little boy had this after a course of antibiotics, can't remember which ones now. Didn't look nice for a week or so but went back to normal a little after he stopped taking them.

Hello, yes some antibiotics can turn teeth yellow, it should say in the side effects leaflet. My daughter had a long course if antibiotics and her teeth were bright yellow by the end of it. We took her to the GP as we couldn't get it off with normal brushing. Once the antibiotics were finished it started to brush off but took a while.

Antibiotics do cause yellow/brown stains on teeth. You can take your child to the dentist, they can give him a quick polish. Also, there are some mouthwash that causes stain on teeth so avoid.

Yes, we have had the yellow teeth staining with amoxicillin, but the teeth do go back to normal after a week or so. Nothing to worry about.

DD has extensive staining after multiple ABs over the years. The dentist has said there's nothing to be done until she's old enough for professional whitening (I.e. 18) but the latest toothpaste seems to be making a difference.

hmm could be various things. when one of my dcs started getting tooth decay around 2yrs I took him to the dentist worried, turns out he has something called enamel hyperplaysia (sp?) basically for whatever reason the enamel on his teeth did not form whilst he was in the womb. They have no idea if itll affect adult teeth until the adult teeth come through.
