DD (8) coughing for weeks - post viral or habit?

My daughter had a bad cough with a virus over Christmas. She got better but the cough has stayed. I thought it was improving a few weeks ago but now it seems to be getting worse. It's odd though - she only does it when awake, never while asleep. It's not a productive cough at all. She just does a single cough which is more like an attempt to clear her throat - but she is doing it ALL the time, can be as often as every few seconds. It's very irritating - not least to her. Took her to the docs yesterday who said probably is a post viral cough - did her sats, took temp, listened to chest etc - all fine. Said come back if not cleared in a month and they'd go down the habit route. It's been a stressful time in our family since Christmas as my dad is seriously ill and I know she's picked up on that. When she is very relaxed or sucking her thumb (which she still does, sadly) she doesn't cough very often at all. Also weirdly she says she does it much more at home than at school. Other than a cough she is fine (though her throat is a bit sore, unsurprisingly). Eating, playing etc all fine. Anyone else had this? Seems like a habit to me.
