Surgery to 3 year old to correct humerus fracture displacement

Some very good advice on here to advise what to say and do but...

Our son has to have two operations to correct a fracture to distal humerus. Basically it's not healing in the correct place. The surgeon advises it can be left but may lead to an operation age 8-10. We have been advised that he will be left with over extension at elbow that will impair participation in sports at higher level. However it is conjecture and the surgeon was on the fence as what is best.

We don't want to put him through two ops if we don't need to but also don't want something that can be corrected now to affect his later choices.

Any comments or advice gratefully received.
