Day 4 of bad cold or flu?

floppops · 18/12/2013 09:08

DD is 3.11 and woke up with a high temperature at 2am on Saturday night. She's had an elevated temperature most of the time since with spikes in the day and night of up to 40. Keeping it under control with calpol and she's drinking loads and managing a little to eat when the calpol kicks in.
Just am so tired as she can't sleep. I'm also 7 months pregnant which doesn't help! She's slept fitfully on me a couple of nights and the other couple she's just awake with only an hours nap in the day to make up for it..
How long will this last!?
It's a shame as she's missing her Xmas nursery concert today :(

Are you sure its not something like tonsillitis or an ear infection? I always find with a high temp near 40 it usually is one of those. Have you taken her to the GP?

Lovethebubbles · 18/12/2013 13:38

If she's had a temperature for more than 3 days definitely get her checked by her GP. If it's a virus, temperature should be settling after 2-3 days. She could have an infection somewhere. Hope she's better soon.

Pretty sure it's not tonsillitis as she had recurrent tonsillitis when she was 2 and she couldn't eat at all. She can eat now but obviously not much as she just feels poorly. Guess it could be a ear infection but I just don't think so..I think it's viral. Also she has never been able to take antibiotics-long story of recurrent infections and doctors holding her down etc..she just refuses or vomits it back up.
She has been misdiagnosed with a ear infection when it was tonsillitis before and then we saw an ENT specialist who advised it to be self limiting anyway.
So not in a hurry to make her more poorly by walking in the cold to the docs and pos risk her getting a secondary infection as a result.
As I said pretty sure it's viral just wondering how long this bug is lasting for..

One of my DDs had a virus that took around 5 days to go once. She had a temp for that long too and was really poorly. So I would say if no improvement over 5 days then get her checked. (Regarding antibiotics, if she is a refuser, try and get azithromycin prescribed. It is taken once a day for 3 days and is a lot easier. Had a similar problem with DD2).

Thanks for that info re antibiotics-will make a note of that. She hasn't had a temp yet today since the morning and has had a long nap so I'm hoping last night was the last night of fever.
