DS asthma attack, been to A&E but has worsened

We were in A&E on Saturday night. Started the usual way, slight cough and a little wheezy. They sent us home with Prednisolone steroid for 3 days and he's finished those now (had the first dose in A&E).

But he's not improving on 4 hourly salbutamol as well as his normal seretide. Also breathing fast and says it hurts when he coughs. He's 5.

Back to A&E?

Yes. Did you get a 24/48 hour bounce back pass?

mrsflowerpot · 16/12/2013 16:35

Yes, the prednisolone should have see him significantly better after 2 doses really, so go back. Go prepared to stay over I would say. Hope he's improving soon.

ChristmasJumperWearer · 16/12/2013 16:35

Ya, back to A&E. please don't take any risks.

funkypigeon · 16/12/2013 16:36

Giles

No we didn't, which I've read about on here. Guess we'll just have to wait it out. How does that work then, you just go back to the ward? Or A&E?

Thanks, will go back now.

It's been a while since we had one. I think yet said at the time that you can just go straight back to the wars rather than sit around in a&e but never had to use ours thankfully. But you should get seen quickly anyway. Pack a bag and go. I hope he feels better soon.

We're old hands at this. Back to A+E.

Meanwhile, give him 4 puffs of the blue inhaler. One puff, 10 breaths, 30 seconds in between each puff.

If he's still breathing fast within 20 mins then do 10 puffs.

Take a note of when you do the extra inhalers.

If he's struggling at all, or pale, phone an ambulance. I got a right strip torn off me for driving Middleygrip to A+E when his sats were in his boots - no outward symptoms, but, he really did need some oxygen.

Take overnight stuff, if he's not managing 4 hourlies they'll likely admit him.

don't worry, but, get him back sharpish.

funkypigeon · 16/12/2013 19:33

Just a quick update. He's staying in as his sats are rubbish and as expected is wheezy on 10 puffs every 4 hours. So now hourly. Thanks for your replies.

Thinking of you, been here with my son, you are in the best hands now -

gussiegrips · 16/12/2013 21:46

Glad to hear you're in. Hope the machines that go ping get turned down low tonight and you both get some sleep.

Sirzy · 16/12/2013 21:49

hope hi picks up quickly.

shatteredstudentmum · 16/12/2013 22:00

Hope he picks up soon, it's horrible when it gets so bad, ds1 spent his 5th birthday on a nebulizer in our local hospital.
