2.5 y/o shouting 'it hurts' but can't tell me where.

I'm not sure what to do really. 2.5 y/o DS woke up about an hour ago crying and shouting 'it hurts'. I can't work out where and he's saying no to everywhere I ask. He's been fine all day and he hasn't got a temperature.
I've given him calpol. Not sure what to do, would I be mad to take him to a and e?!

Any pointers at all? Is he pulling his legs up, could be stomach. Is he hiding his eyes, headache? Ask him to look at his feet so you can rule out his neck hurting. If you are worried take him. Hope he is better soon.

Could he be constipated? Or have ear ache? Those are the two reasons my dd2 would wake up shouting. Wouldn't think A&E is any good unless he develops any other symptoms.

My dd did this when she had worms....took awhile to figure out that that was the problem (figured it out through a mumsnet post).

I was going to say worms too. Had it with my dd at similar age and time of night. I now have ovex in the house at all times.

I don't think it's his neck as she's been sitting up and moving around. 1st of all I thought it was his foot as he was pulling at his toes, then he started itching his head and said it wasn't is feet. He just said he has a tummy ache but when I touched various parts of his stomach and asked him if it was there he said no (although he does tend to say no a lot at the best of times!)
It's not like him at all, he very rarely cries and us usually very good at making himself understood.

Are there any flu type bugs going round in his nursery/childcare, everything hurts with those?

I think he's actually still 1/2 asleep tbh, which is why he's not communicating well.

Tummy ache in dd1 always meant her throat was sore! (Apparently there's a rational explanation for that to do with glands swelling in the tummy). Hope he's better now with calpol.

I think that the worms wriggling around makes a very uncomfortable, unfamiliar sensation that they aren't able to easily describe.

Have the same problem with my toddler tonight. She is prone to dramatics but not usually this bad.
Has had a cold and temp a few days ago. I thought maybe constipated but DH thinks earache. Off to google worm symptoms,

I would also think worms. It's very unsettling, but easy to deal with.

GROSS ALERT: Get a flashlight and inspect their anus in the middle of the night ...you can see the worms wiggling around.

Tummy ache with DS was always ears. We struggled with his ears. GP told me once it's common for wee ones to describe sore ears really vaguely which is why they always check them anyway.
Lying down in bed might have made them more sore.

Might take mine to GP to check ears in the morning. Has had a few infections in the past. Asleep again thanks to DH.

I'd vote worms.

Yes DS had this with worms. Screaming in pain and writhing. I don't think they can differentiate all that well between pain and other sorts of discomfort which worms are - more tickly/itchy/horrible wriggling sensation.

For an immediate calmer you can put a bit of vaseline around their anus which seems to reduce the movement and then get some ovex first thing in the morning. They don't tend to be bothered by it in the day, just at night. And get nail brushes!

Or the other thing DS used to get at that age specifically was constipation, he always said his legs hurt, but it would be a big poo that he refused to do. I gave him watered down calpol in some strong squash and told him it was magic medicine - seemed to work and calm him down enough to sleep, next day he'd do a huge poo. It was a potty training phase.

Nail brushes for nails, BTW, to scrub when hand washing. Not for the child's bum which is what a friend thought I meant and was horrified!

Yup, random screaming in night here invariable = worms, sigh.

Thanks for all the replies. As if by magic he suddenly fell asleep and was fine in the morning. I haven't completely ruled out worms and am keeping an eye out tor them.
