calling all parents of reflux babies on ranitidine and domperidone!

My 3.5mo has reflux and is on these meds. Ive stopped the infant Gaviscon as it makes him constipated.

He is a very windy baby (both ends) and often cries in pain from it. Just wondered if anyone knows whether he can have infacol whilst on these meds?

Yes, I had 3 preemies, 2 of which were on ranitidine and domperidone and we gave them all infacol before each feed which definitely helped.

Yep you can give infacol

Were you dosing the gaviscon properly? Its something like sachet in 4oz or 2 in over 180ml feed so if you put 2in a 4oz feed it wwould constipate dc.

If you need more meds don't be afraid to ask.
Ds1 is 3 and because of reflux he got food aversion which lead to failure to thrive which lead to him being fed by tube into his stomach.

Hes only just starting to catch up 18months on after having his feeding tube put in.
Dont let gps fob you off. If you see no improvement on 2weeks push for paediatric referral if they dont help much push for gastroenterologest referral

Yep was doing Gaviscon properly. We already see a paediatrician about it and have a dietician appt for just before 6 months so will get advice on weaning with reflux and cmpa.

Are you increasing the meds as he puts on weight? Are you winding regularly and keeping upright for 20 mins after a feed. Infacol is fine to use btw. I went through bottles of he stuff.

So dc is cmpa too.

It took us 18months for the gp to take ds seriously.

By that time so much damage was done.
Horrible horrible thing is reflux!
The book colic solved os brilliant have a read. Its veeery helpful. I got recommended it too late so not a lot applied to us but I could say yes that's him etc.

We found gaviscon made DTs constipated, infacol sent them the other way so together they were in the middle! Cost us a fortune in infacol but worth it.

Thanks all, yes his meds have just been increased. We spend ages winding and keep upright after feeds, which is a nightmare for night feeds!

We were very lucky to be referred after only 3 doctors visits and got seen at the paediatrician's clinic the next day. He was only 6 weeks old so got meds then and prescription milk a couple of weeks later.

We did use infacol before but not since he went on meds so ill give it another go. If it loosens his poo ill stick him back on the Gaviscon!

Have you all found the cmpa support website and Facebook page? I can't do links on my (old) phone but they are an ace group of parents who share info and sympathy. There's also a specific group in cmpa support for reflux.

My DS also has a cmpa.

Pobble - do you find that your DS has really bad gas? Wondered if it was a cmpa thing?

Oh yes the gas is a CMPA thing. Basically, the digestive system really struggles to cope with what's going in.
But if he is on a suitable milk it shouldn't be affecting him now. Is he on neocate or a similar elemental milk or just hydrolysed? If he's stilll struggling and is on hydrolysate, then possibly he needs an elemental milk?

To be honest, I never found the Ran/ Dom combo a very effective one. There are other meds that can be used - including Omeprazole or Lansoprazole - which tend to be more useful. They can have side=effects though like all meds, but could be something to discuss with the paed.

He's always been a windy boy yes! He's on Neocate too but we're trying to get him back on to dairy. He's still on ranitidine at 21 months.

He is on aptamil pepti at the moment. He is so windy/gassy its unreal. Always uncomfortable (but much better than when on normal milk) and his farts are so loud and constant. Should I speak to the doc/hv about a different milk?

Well it's possible the milk's not broken down enough or alternatively.... it could be that the gut is still damaged from having normal formula and is, for example, still not producing any lactase ( seem to remember pepti 1 has a smallish amount of lactose in....). I think it's pribably worth discussing an elemental milk although expect resistance - that stuff's expensive for health trusts to fund.
