Croup in three yr old and six month old, Calpol usage guidelines

Both of my children have Croup. It's been going on for five days or more now. Calpol usage states no more than three days but it seems to help n terms of pain and temp. Dr told me to use it if necessary. My six month old is also teething badly and is in all sorts of bother.

How long can I use Calpol for? Six month old has had it on and off (not max dose) for six days now.

It's fine, we tell post tonsillectomy patients to use it for a week and more!

I think the thing is that, if you're needing paracetamol for three days or more then maybe its something you should get checked out by a GP as there may be something that needs treating, not that you can't use it for more than three days. Does that make sense?

You can use nurofen too.

Thank you v much Pobble. I keep reading about parents who have only had ever had one bottle in the cupboard for the whole of their toddlers life and that more than two doses a day is excessive!

Have you thought that they might need steroids?

OhGood · 11/11/2013 10:18

Oh my GOD my 4mo and 3yo also just had this. 3yo for a week, poor little 4mo ongoing (coming into 3 week now, improving slowly.) Nightmare, shame, how is sleep? I feel like the 4mo has had a complete factory reset, can't sleep on his own any more at all.

Anyway, A&E doc said calpol does not build up in their systems and it's fine to keep giving it. He had a dose or 2 a night for about 10 days. Shame, that cough sounds really painful, and I think it helped him.

Good luck.

Well, he wasn't barky for long, but we were in and out of docs and a and e for at least 10 days as his breathing went up and down. Hope you all get over it much more quickly.
