temp of 39C in 11mo. what to do?

is this really high? i am unsure. she is very tired and crying. do i put her to bed as normal with some calpol?

she is usually so content and hardly ever cries so i am finding this stressful. please help if you can.

if she is unhappy then yes give some calpol. If that doesn't work within an hour or so then you can give some ibuprofen. Note the dosage and number of times each can be given in 24hours as they do differ

I phoned NHS direct with similar, and they advised to put him to bed with Calpol. We sneaked in later and checked it and it had gone down a bit.

I think if your DC was under 6mo, you might need medical advice but as they're older you should Calpol and keep an eye on her. But if you're really worried phone NHS direct or OOH doc.

it is stressful; I think most of us feel that way when they have a high temp.

It is high yes - it could be teething or something inert but OTOH it is generally worth having a baby seen at this age with that sort of fever.

I would give her baby nurofen (or calpol if you've not got any) which is good at bringing down fevers, and talk to the Out of Hours at the same time.

Hopefully by the time they ring back it will have come down and you can rest easy, but even so, check on her in the night or keep her close by to you.
Temps like that can cause a convulsion if they go up or down too quickly, or she may be sick or something so do stay in earshot at least.

They may wish to see her tonight. Also if her fever does not come down within about 45 mins of meds then she needs to be seen asap.

Give her calpol and/or calprofen but recheck it in an hour. If its still this high then take her to out of hours GP or A&E. it's a brave doctor that refuses to take a good look at a baby with a high temp and a parent saying they're just not themselves.

Thank you all. I have put her to bed (panicking that she has too many layers on now!) with Calpol and Nurofen. I have been advised before by GP that these can be given to her together for something else.

Have called OOH and am waiting for doc to call me back.

She has just fallen asleep. She is exhausted bless her.

How many layers does she have - at that temp, I would be stripping to a nappy and either a single sheet or a thin vest thing.

Good idea to bath in a draughty room (door and window open) and allow to dry off after before dressing, to cool down

She is in a short sleeved vest and babygro. No covers. OOH called back and want to see her. We will be going in shortly. Thank you for your help. She woke up again after 15 minutes and is now totally exhausted.

JUst to update you: we are home from OOH. Doc says probably viral infection, possibly slapped cheek. DD's cheeks are very red but I think this could all be stemming from teething. Will keep dosing with Calpol and Nurofen to try to get temp down. Now to get her to sleep...

She's not great today to be honest. She's still got a temp, though it is lower than last night!

She has diarrhoea and a bright red bottom and is really rather unhappy. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day for her.

I know it's late, and I think you've done exactly the right thing already, but I just wanted to highlight my experience (and info from medics) that ibuprofen is faster at bringing down a fever and can last a bit longer and that its fine in the short term (a couple of days or so) to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen as long as you don't go over the maximum dose for either. When mine has a fever that high, I just dose alternately every 2/3 hours and add up the totals so his temp stays down. Easier to keep fever down than to get it down in the first place iyswim. In case it's reassuring, 39 or 40 degrees is high, but not unusual. Poor little thing - I hope it doesn't last long! x

When ds had meningitis the 1st he was checked on day1 he was given antibiotics and sent home by gp as je thought it was chest infection starting then day2 tookhim hhospital as he was ill then he perked up they sent him home
Day3 he was really ill. Lathergic but still crying iyswim.
He had lumber puncture done at 2am after bekng transferred from 1hosp to another and it was just precaution amd it turned out to be meningitis amd sepetcimia.
Dont mean to scare you but better safe than sorry
