3 yr old DS hard bump to the head

DS lost control on his scooter earlier today. Was going too fast and wobbling so he couldn't get his foot on the brake in time before he hit the kerb and went flying onto the pavement and hit his head.

I know he should have had a helmet on (he has one he wears on his bike I just don't know why he didn't have it on this afternoon on his scooter, I am kicking myself and feel terrible and know he should have had it on).

He has a huge egg shaped lump on his forehead, he didn't lost consciousness. Because of the speed he was going I made DP take him to A&E. He has had a check over and been given a dressing (as also grazed his head) and the doctor told him to rest at home tomorrow. He said DS is okay. I asked DP to ask the doctor about delayed bleeding on the brain and he said it was unlikely.

Of course I have now got myself in an utter tizz about any long term damage that might come of this or the delayed bleeding that Google threw up.

Does anyone have experience if their DC really smacking their head hard on the pavement and being ok? Am trying not to freak out.

Thanks
TOOIK.

It's good you got him checked out but I wouldn't worry too much. Children's heads are still a bit more flexible than adults. My two have done some shocking stunts and seem to have got away with it. It probably won't be his first head injury either.
Check on him before you go to bed and in the night if you wake up,too. If he is not sick or seems unlike himself in any way then he's fine. If you have any doubt, take him to be checked again.
Brew Thanks

Mine have had some awful bumps to the head, and so far are fine.

I think the good thing is that the swelling is coming up on the outside, so not putting pressure on the brain.

Also, you have had him checked out, and I would imagine they had him in for a while. As jewel says, I would check on him a couple of times in the night to put your mind at rest, but I think all will be well.

I always say.. bumps are good. Swelling is outside the head and not internal as has been said.

Just keep and eye put and some painkillers if needed . hope he's on the mend soon.

Thank you for your kind and reassuring words, i really appreciate it. They arent back yet from the hospital but should be back soon. He was full of beans when i spoke to him on the phone after he had seem the doctor. I guess i am freaking out because i googled head injuries in children and all the deaths or life changing instances because of not wearing a helmet.

I dont want to ever think of DS asking me why he never had a helmet on. :-(
