baby born with large lump on his thumb

My friends baby was born with a large, red, swollen lump on his thumb. The doctors say its not cancerous but don't know what it is. It is very large in proportion to his tiny hand and has a scab on the underside. has anyone ever come across this before?

Could it be an extra digit. My niece had one of these on each hand. They looked a bit like lumps as there was no bone and they didn't form like the other digits.
