Health visitor or Dr - newborn tiny red rash on body

I am a bit confused about who I call with health queries and wondered if anyone can help? My nearly 4 week old has a tiny red rash on her torso and neck (and possibly face but she also has baby acne so hard to tell).

Do I call HV or Dr for reassurance / advice at this age?

To my mind, it's a health concern, so a doctor. I'd say a health visitor is for general support, and advice on feeding, looking after, weight etc.

Yes, doctor.

I would say GP if you're worried. Do you think it could just be heat rash?

noblegiraffe · 18/10/2013 10:50

Have you done the glass test? If it doesn't disappear when you press a glass against it, then A&E.

Definitely GP. HV's are more for advice rather than making medical diagnoses. Don't mess about with rashes on tiny babies. Mostly they're nothing but when they're not they can be life threatening.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for the advice - good to understand a bit more HV role.

I did ring HV in the end as couldn't get through to Dr and was in a flap. Talked it through and it seems fine. It could be heat or possibly detergent but she thought just a normal rash from exposure to life.

I have done the glass test and read up on meningitis. The rash does go under glass and she is otherwise fine.

I'll keep on eye on it, thanks again.
