My DD has been on Dulcolax suppositories for over a year now, is this harmful?

Hi, my daughter has SEN's and suffers from chronic constipation and soiling and has done since she was about 2 years old. She's now 8.5. Last year she was prescribed Dulcolax as well as the usual Movicol and it has been a god send! She hardly ever soils now, but if we miss a dose, she does get constipated and soils herself.
Her bowel and bladder nurse told us at the time of prescribing the medication that she could only be on it a few months, to kick start her into a normal pattern. I'm just a bit concerned that she has been on it for so long now. Will it make her bowel lazy? Are there any alternatives as she seems to go back to her old ways without it.
Thanks. Smile

When was her medication last reviewed? Do you just get her suppositories on a repeat prescription?

My ds almost 2 has been on dulcolax brand of sodium picosulfate for 7 months now with no mention of ever stopping it. He has it in liquid form though, not a suppository. None of the paediatricians have ever said about any long term effects of it.

It is on repeat prescription. It was last reviewed about 3 months ago. The nurse said to keep her on it a while longer as she was doing so well on it.

If she can't manage without it then I suppose she must be okay on it. The only other alternative I ever heard about is senna, but my ds paediatricians seem to like the dulcolax so he's on that on repeat prescription. As the alternative is an enema or a bowel washout in hospital I dont mind him staying on the dulcolax!!
