Ill baby with very fast heart beat - is this normal?

My son (nearly 10 months) has been ill for a couple of days. Sickness, diarrhoea and general snottiness. On the whole he has been fine in himself but today he's been very clingy and sleeping a lot. I can feel his heart through his chest as I hold him now and it seems to be flickering away at high speed. I also listened to his heart beat through his back and it seems really fast. It sounds much faster than when he was a fetus for example. Is this normal when someone is ill or a cause for concern?

Call NHS direct or head straight to A&E.
Don't take the chance.
Only you can see if his heart is fast as we aren't there. I would expect a sick persons heart to beat faster, but if I was concerned I would seek immediate help.

A raised temp can cause a high heartbeat, but I wouldn't be taking any chances if it isn't dropping

I'd ring NHS Direct, too.
