Swollen penis in toddler with UTI - is it blocked?

DS (2.9) has been diagnosed with a UTI and is having terribly painful wees. He holds on until he cant hold it any longer and then screams and cries while going. He has to go standing up and running/hopping on the spot, can't sit on the potty. This evening i managed to hold his hands away while he went in the bath and saw his whole penis balloon to more than twice its width while he was weeing. I'd noticed it was looking swollen and discoloured and thought it might be caused by the infection, or bruised from being clutched when he's trying not to go, but now I'm worried about blockages. This is the third day of antibiotics with no improvement, lab results from Monday not back yet, and we've just been given new antibiotics as the original ones weren't working, but if its a physical bit of damage presumably the new ones won't work either... Anyone had experience or know what this is please?

I would get him checked out ASAP

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 11/09/2013 23:12

And I hope he is better soon :)!poor wee guy

Jenny70 · 11/09/2013 23:12

If wee can come out, it's not blocked.

My DS had swollen penis when tip got an infection - cleared quickly with a ab cream. But it really hurt to wee for a day or two.

And my eldest ds must have the wee hole a bit to one side, as his foreskin bulges out when he wees - the things we learn with boys! No ill effect mind you.

Sounds like the ab are not clearing the uti, and he's holding it to prevent pee pain. Weeing in the bath can be less painful, if he will.

LargeLatte · 11/09/2013 23:16

His foreskin sounds too tight or infected. Think its called balanitis. This can be misdiagnosed as uti or cann cause a uti.

Get him checked asap.

ballooning while trying to wee can be clogged foreskin. Possibly caused by a dried-up discharge. no expert on UTIs here. It may help if you can get him to wee while sitting in a warm bath, this may also help soften clogging if that's what it is. To me it sounds like he urgently needs A&E.

Thanks ladies. Jenny , was your DS's penis sort of discoloured all over and protruding more (which is what DS's is like) or just swollen at the tip where the infection was? If that's not too intrusive... I can't find any references to a swollen willy from several hours of UTI symptom-googling. DH was supposed to mention it to docs in telephone consultation today for new antibiotics but forgot Angry

It was a while back,, but as I recall the whole willy was swollen and red (almost purple). When I first saw it, I though something must have tied around it, looked like when your finger gets red if you tie something around it, but swollen too. (But also have a friend whose son's teddy ribbon cut off supply to his finger and it went black and damaged nerves, so always paranois at things getting tied around bits!).

MoJangled · 11/09/2013 23:34

Ah thanks, Latte Piglet and Red , cross-posted. I've just googled balanitis and if its that it's spread to his whole penis not just the glans/foreskin... He's asleep now but unless he wakes up again we'll be off to the docs in the morning. Poor scrap. In hospital with croup last week. Never rains...

Yes I was going to say balanitis

MoJangled · 11/09/2013 23:47

That sounds just like it. Thanks for the advice ladies. It'll be A&E if there's a midnight awakening or docs first thing...

Any news this morning OP - how's he doing?

neolara · 12/09/2013 11:51

If it is balanitis, canesten cream can clear it up pretty quickly.

MoJangled · 12/09/2013 21:37

This morning it seemed a little less discoloured so I thought the antibiotics must be kicking in, and missed the window with the docs. But weeing still dreadful and now he hates the bath by association. He's bright and happy the rest of the time which also makes me hope the infection might be going down, but not fast enough. Have docs appt in morning, even if they do just tell me to keep going with the ab's, which I rather think they will do.

Thanks for the help and advice ladies... will post verdict tomorrow in case others are having the same panic

Doctors verdict: tight foreskin and infected tip (he didn't say balanitis but presumably this is what it is) causing the whole thing to be inflamed and the painful wees. We now have antibiotic ointment and have had two screaming wees and one calm one an hour ago so I think it's already working. Why couldn't they have started us off with the ointment 5 days ago Angry Angry Angry

Thanks very much for the advice and information ladies, much appreciated!
