When do you start worrying about a nasty cough (8yr old DS)

DS has had a very heavy cold (unbelievable amounts of snot!) which he has had for about 9 days. He's still very snotty but a little better. In himself, he's ok. A bit tired but no temperature. He now has a really nasty barking cough which he's had for 5 days. It's worse morning and evening.

Is it worth a trip to the doctor?

Is the cough not mucussy anymore?

I take it his breathing is otherwise ok? No blueness / tracheal tug/ sucking in under ribs?

I'd probably give him another couple of days with lots of rest and lots and lots and lots of fluids and some fresh air if possible and see how he goes.

Thanks Bea. No, no sign of any breathing problems. No, the cough isn't really gunky, more dry but a big cough from the chest rather than a small one from the throat iykwim!

I don't think I've heard it quite as much this morning so I'm going to do what you suggested and leave it for a couple of days and see.

If your worried then take them to see the doctors.
My dd9 got a cough this time last year. After 3 lots of antibiotics they said its whooping cough. That was a long 3 monthsHmm

Hope they get better soon.
