Eww ds (6) has worms , am freaking out a bit, any experience?

Ds has been saying hrs had an itchy bum for a while but we've never seen anything when we've checked - until tonight :(

I understand we have to treat the whole family - is the medication ok tasting? Dd(2) is a medicine refuser and is also sick with anything that makes her gag even a tiny bit. Has anyone experenced any side effects?

Also I'm feeling really anxious about the hygiene side of it, for example the kids have hundreds and hundreds of toys - by the time I've cleaned them all they'll be reinfected.

What about mattresses and pillows and duvets?

I just cannot imagine how I will do so much cleaning in such a short space of time that the kids won't reinfect themselves in the meantime iyswim?

Any tips greatly appreciated! I have anxiety anyways and admit I'm feeling pretty on edge.

Yes one of mine had worms! The pill was huge. yes I would disinfect everything you can because they (eggs) can live on surfaces for three weeks. Alternatively bleach their fave toys and put everything thing else away for a month.

Dont' be embarrassed though - happens to more people than you think.

AnythingNotEverything · 18/08/2013 23:33

Te medicine we used was like a Rennies, and you had to chew it. It took all the saliva from your mouth, but didn't taste of anything. It wasn't awful, but if I ever thought DS hadn't washed his hands properly, I could threaten him with worm tablets, and he's get the soap out.

I think the general advice is separate towels, extra vigilant handwashing before eating and clean sheets.

I don't know how long the eggs live on toys in afraid.

Crumbledwalnuts · 18/08/2013 23:33

by the way my experience is

two people took worm tablets (me and the child) (three people in the house didn't)
I changed only his sheets and bedding
and did a normal house clean a day early

they didn't come back

Clary · 18/08/2013 23:35

We have taken a liquid medicine in the past.

Iron your sheets. That's one reason I do it anyway. Dust the bedrooms. Don't worry too much about the toys IME.

Does anyone suck their thumb or bite their nails? Now's the time to to stop that.

BeaWheesht · 18/08/2013 23:46

Thanks.

Yes ds has his fingers in his mouth constantly - how do I stop him??? I've been trying really really hard for months!

I am not good at stuff like this, I wish we could just move our I feel like everything is infested and Yuck just feel horrid and a bit overwhelmed!

Medicine tastes ok actually. Wash his bum thoroughly at night every night to get rid of eggs etc

Madamecastafiore · 19/08/2013 07:17

Treat again in 2 weeks too and cut his fingernails as short as you can.

If he keeps getting it paint the stuff on his nails that tastes awful.

BeaWheesht · 19/08/2013 07:43

Thanks all. Yes I think I might use the stop nail biting stuff if I have to.

I'm going to go get the medicine this morning and hope dd takes it! Also going to buy lots if soap, washing powder, wet wipes and some tight pants for ds.

Happy Monday morning!

It's a rite of passage - loads of kids get worms, same as nits. Do what everyone else says, and keep a packet of the tablets in the house at all times for any future recurrence.

BeaWheesht · 19/08/2013 08:35

How mad do I need to go with cleaning? We have just had. ALOT I building work done so everything's a bit up in the air as it is.

Obviously am keeping on top of hand hygiene as much as you can but feeling stressed because obviously the kids have to touch couches , toys, tables, clothes etc and I don't want to make them paranoid!!

CockyFox · 19/08/2013 08:43

If you have a tumble dryer use it for sheets towels and underwear as dry heat kills the eggs.
Bleach and other cleaners don't so no need to go mad. Don't shake the bed sheets when making beds as it makes eggs airborne.
Don't worry about it too much most kids get them at some point

gamerchick · 19/08/2013 08:54

Go to the chemist and get a family pack of ovex. It tastes ok honestly.

Put all bedding on a hot wash. The same with underwear... A good iron of them will make sure the eggs are dead. Use a pack of baby wipes and do a good dusting to pick any eggs up. Wipe all door handles, light switches.. anything your use fingers for etc.

The medicine paralyses the worm so they are expelled in the waste so there shouldn't be any itching tonight.. just make sure to treat a week later to kill the hatchlings before they are able to lay.

And breath.. It really isn't a huge deal just irritating.

devilinside · 19/08/2013 09:23

Dc had them and we just doled out the tablets, didn't wash anything and they were eliminated very quickly.

BeaWheesht · 19/08/2013 10:42

Gamer chick - we've had the ovex but they said usually only one dose?

Have mopped floors and wiped down tables and windowsill and handles etc. I just don't know if I'm getting too stressed about this or whether I'm being 'normal'.

I am stressed because I feel like I'm going to be cleaning non stop for ages and the eggs are still getting spread around. I'm not sleeping well so I'm already exhausted and its a bit of the straw that broke the camels back scenario.

gamerchick · 19/08/2013 10:58

Then stop... I really wouldn't stress. Keep nails short, a good hand washing routine is all you need to do after treatment.. It sounds as if you've done enough cleaning.

Unless you're dry dusting you're probably picking them up.. There won't be millions coating all over the place.

You might be right about the ovex.. I'm probably thinking of that vile raspberry milkshake.

BeaWheesht · 19/08/2013 11:53

Thanks am going to Hoover carpets, couches and mattresses and wipe down bathrooms.

Hoping there are no side effects to ovex then at least if we need a second dose it won't be such a big deal.
