4.5yr DD tooth abscess and face swelling

DD1 woke yesterday with pain in her mouth and some swelling on her face. DH took her to the dentist who prescribed amoxycillin. By the time I returned from work DD looked like she had a golf ball in her cheek.

She has had 2 doses of amoxycillin and slept fine last night but I've just been to look at her face and the swelling looks even worse.

I googled abscess and it says treatment is to train the abscess or remove a tooth. She hasn't had either of those.

I'm just wondering if its normal to treat an abscess in a child just with antibiotics? She looks absolutely disfigured.

It is normal for the first treatment to be antibiotics, it's also common for it to look worse before it gets better, especially in the morning as everything has pooled and makes it look more swollen

If her eye his closing or you are at all worried about her breathing get her seen again, otherwise see what she is like after another 2 doses of medicine

The first sign of it getting better is the reduction of pain rather than a reduction in swelling

Thanks chickens! Sorry I completely forgot that I had posted.

It did take a few days to go down but the pain did go quickly.

It was a horrible experience all round though so we're super-strict on sugar now. I never want her going through that again.
