Nasty raised rash, toddler unwell - gp unsure

Ds, 14 months, developed a raised temperature, loss of appetite and an awful raised rash on Tuesday. Took him to gp, not meningitis, not chicken pox, suggested a viral rash. It is on back on neck, lower back, legs. It has now spread to fingers and knees and thighs. Temperature down to 37-38.

He has multiple allergies, but none cause a reaction like this - usually hives. He has had gluten through my breastmilk for the first time and soya - but trying not to blame allergies.

Don't want to bother gp again. Using calpol. Not sure what to do, ds is sore. I looked up pictures of his rash on NHS website, but only one that it looked like is the meningitis one but gp pressed it and said it wasn't that, so not sure what it is or what to do.

How is he in himself?

Piriton might reduce he rash/discomfort if an allergy?

Is the rash fading now when you put a glass on it. I think if you have ANY doubt get him seen asap - ie if he is unwell at all then ask again. Twice DD saw doctors and was sent away with "a virus" before she developed a non fading rash and landed in intensive care. She thankfully is here to tell the tale, but please just because you have been told once it isn't meningitis it doesn't mean they are right for sure. (DD had been ill for around 48hrs before she became seriously ill). Trust your instinct. On balance of probability it is probably just a nasty viral rash of some sort but be safe.

An allergy wouldn't cause a raised temperature, and also like you say the rash with an allergy is usually hives.

If you are concerned you can ring out-of-hours doctor and speak to someone. I have found them to be very helpful when I've rung.

Thanks. Have given piriton for his hayfever and calpol. Rash does fade thankfully but am checking regularly.

Yes instinct says virus but am going to do what dr said and keep checking and if temp rises or any other symptom straight to out of hours or even a&e.

Ds seems better than earlier today which is a relief, it is just such a nasty looking rash.

How's his tongue looking? Could it be scarlet fever?

tongue is normal. Thanks - am going to get a dr's appointment for today as he is still refusing food and rash not any better.

Has he had MMR?

Tests. Unsure of cause. It came too sudden over body to be eczema.

If you are worried I would go to a&e. GPs have missed meningitis before. I would not chance it.

My daughter gets a rash every time she has any virus. The first time it happened it scared me to death, now it just scares everyone else. The staff at her nursery have always been laid back about it too as it is obviously something they have seen before.
