help! 6 yr old dd can't get out of bed because her neck hurts?

She is ok otherwise. Didn't know this could happen to children?! She's lying on her side and if I try even a gentle movement she howls in pain.
And no ice in the house as freezer wad turned off by accident a few days ago, so I chucked everything out and it is empty!
Any advice welcomethanks

Does she have a fever? Sore/stiffneck can be a sympton of meningitis.

any idea why? where on her neck? is she otherwise well?

She may have slept funny and trapped a nerve, try putting a hot water bottle on the area that hurts and giving it a bit of a massage. Obviously if it is accompanied by a headache/temp/rash u need to get her seen. Hope she is ok xx

I know, but she really is fine, no fever I opened the curtains and she is watching a sbd. It's only if she tries to turn her neck. But will be calling nhs as my next course of action.

Hope you get some good advice. It could also be enlarged lymph nodes in her neck. Ds2 couldn't move his neck a few years ago and the doctors couldn't move it either. He got rushed to hospital and admitted with suspected meningitis and he simply had enlarged lymph nodes in his neck which was restricting his movement. Let us know how she is doing xx

Thanks. It's just one side of her neck. I often get this, so assumed it would be the same thing. Obv. Initially I panicked but half an hour later I can see it's only one side and she has found a comfy position.
Will go with warmth and massage and call nhs direct in a bit, if no improvement.

Is it swollen? One side of my neck was agony and swollen when I had mumps (had MMR).

Can you give her nurofen? That might help take some of the pain away and help her move her neck it's the only thing that works for me

Do you have a ho water bottle or wheat bag you can apply to the area? Works for me when I've go a stiff neck.

Hope she manages to move soon, she probaly just slept funny last night.

Really ought to be something cool not warm to start with - I'd go for some painkillers too, ibuprofen or paracetamol.

have you tried a hot water bottle, otherwise try GP. I had to do this for my dd.
GPs excellent,
pain relief and diazepam.

meningitis symptoms I dont think your dd has meningitis but I do think everyone should brush up their knowledge whenever possible. In particular rash is a very late symptom and you shouldn't wait to see it before suspecting meningitis.

Thank you all! Lazarus has risen, declaring 'can I have my breakfast in front of the telly because I'm sick'.
So, happy it's not serious, but she can be such a bad patient!
It's just how I get it, she can only move her torso, rather than neck.

Hi, my 7 yo had this and cried all morning so I took him to emergency doctor thinking he could have broken his neck! and they said he had a virus and would be fine. By teatime he was running around the place like nothing had happened.

Sounds like she slept on it funny. Apply a cold pack rather than heat. Heat encourages swelling.
