Child getting sunburn at school - recommendations for good, longlasting suncream

Hi there
My 5 yr old is coming back from school each day sunburnt. It's horrible. School policy is that they don't put on cream and don't enforce hat wearing either.
I've been putting loads of cream on in the morning and demanding hat wearing but she is coming back with bright red cheeks each day...it's awful to see.
I feel powerless as not sure what else to do. And it's only May - I'm now dreading the summer and longing for rain!!

Can anyone recommend any long lasting, great effective suncream for kids. I tried Riemann P20 today which was recommended by chemist but she still came back sunburnt and is really hot tonight

DD takes her own suncream in with her and she knows to put some on before outdoor play if it's necessary.

We always found Superdrug's own absolutely brilliant but sadly, our local Superdrug has closed down so we're trying out Asda's own atm and we also have some Ambre Solaire. Both children's 50+.

Is she actually burning or is she getting hot if she's feeling warm at home and appears flushed? Mild heat stroke? Is she drinking plenty too?

Our school is v v hot on sun awareness. All dc have to wear a hat if they are going outside, they all carry a water bottle and they will apply cream if you send it in.

If your child is becoming burnt in their care, then they need to be doing more. I'd be requesting a chat with the headteacher asap.

I use the Boots all day cream, I think it's a Soltan one.
The school are also pretty hot on sun hats as well and mine always take them in. I'd have a word with the teacher about the hats.

Soltan Once for kids - they do a factor 30 and 50, waterproof or not (guess if v sweaty). Its very good. Lasts 6-8h.

Ultrasun 50+ is very good. You can get it online. You have to apply it 15 mins before going in the sun but should last all day (assuming they are only outside for a few hours).

DD uses P20 or Ultasun - both once a day application and in our experience both work very well. Have used them in August in Florida for full days in the parks with no trace of not working.

DD is "allergic" or sensitive to lots of suncreams, especially Soltan, etc. but the other two she is fine with.

Piz buin do an "all day long" which costs £12 a tube but it really does last all day. I'm fair and have used it for mountain bike marathons when I'm sweating for 8hrs with no shade.
I can't recommend it highly enough and stock up once a year online.

I also use the piz buin one on myself and DSs. Been using it a few years now and no sunburn. Was very pleased when I went in B&M bargains and saw or for £5.99 as usually buy from Boots.

Have you tried Parasol? Its a once a day type of suncream, actually its an oil rather than a cream. Its very good, I use it on my milky white, red haired dd. You apply it 30 mins before any sun exposure and it protects for up to 6-8 hrs.

My other tip is to put it on when you arrive at school- makes it last eg 30 mins longer at the other end of the day.

I'm also going to speak to the head teacher about it as other mums feel the same and see if we can't encourage/enforce a "hats on" rule. I think they are allowed to take in cream, but have to apply it themselves...but that's something.

My ds had a boots 50+ one that looks a bit like a large chapstick. It is perfect for applying to his face and neck by himself and won't spill or melt in his bag.

I'm surprised that the school don't have a more sensible sun protection protocol.

Ultrasun is brilliant, but shop around for a good price.

Doesn't go off after opening either as it has some sort of special internal bag/system.

P20 is really good. Have used it on DD.

I use Nivea spray on dd and a Soltan facial stick. Sunsense do a roll on which is much easier for little ones to apply themselves.
Definitely speak with school re their policy, they have a duty of care to the children whilst they are at school and that includes ensuring their safety.
The policy is not adequate re hats and sun protection.
