2 week old and heavy cold. When to worry / what to look out for?

DP and my mum have not been well (the same thing - sore throat, sinussy cold, feeling awful).

Tonight I can feel I'm getting it, my throat hurts. I guess 2 week old DD may well be next. But she's so little and it's a heavy cold, which concerns me.

Am I being a worrier or is it a worry if such a young baby gets ill?

I would get some saline nasal spray in to clear her nose of she gets it. Also tilt her Moses or cot will help. Running a hot shower or bath with the doors and window shut will help clear her chest with the steam. Hopefully it will skip your little one.

If you're breast feeding then she'll get antibodies to fight the cold really quickly

Don't worry - normal healthy babies will get grouchy if they have a cold but not suffer any long term harm

Young babies can sometimes develop bronchiolitis (may or may not be correct spelling!) after being exposed to the common cold virus, so I think it's not unreasonable to worry or to ask relatives with colds to stay away for a couple of days while they recover, but unfortunately you can't protect them from everything without driving yourself nuts.

FWIW DS got it and though it was frightening at the time he was fine afterwards.

Hi there. Please don't worry. My little boy ( now 13 months) was really blocked up with a sniffly nose when he was 3 weeks old. You wish they knew how to blow their nose. Anyways I went to Boots and they told me to get a saline nasal spray. It's called Sterimar. Unlike the saline drops its an actual spray that really got up the nose. It was gentle enough for him and the packet even says from birth to 3 years. Definitely worth a try. But go to your GP if at all worried. I also think slightly raising the Moses at the head end is a great idea as mentioned above. Hope she gets a good night sleep tonight x
