Daughter Age 10, Painful Stomach, Acidic Urine, headaches, abdominal migraine???

Hi there, I have an ongoing problem with my daughter having stomach pains in her stomach, acidic urine and sore front and blood and protein in her urine but they cannot find anything wrong with her. They keep putting it down to abdominal migraine but I cannot understand why she has the acidic urine and in pain with her front being sore. I think the GPs are just thinking it is puberty and fobbing us off. I wonder if any of your 10 year old girls are getting this problem and whether we could share some symptoms to see if it is in fact adominal migraine. Apparently it says on the internet that it is common to have migraines in the family but none of my family have ever suffered with migraine. It is having such an impact on her schooling and she feels so miserable all the time bless her!!!

my son used to suffer from abdominal migraine but thankfully seems to have grown out of it. It was very random, just a sick feeling. Nobody in the family has ever had a migraine either ?

Does it hurt or burn when she has a wee ? like a urine infection or cystitis ?

Yes it does but not all the time. She has been tested for a bladder infection and they say that there is blood and protein in the sample but not infection. This has been going on for a year now. Apart from the acidic urine she gets these on and off stomach aches, feeling sick and headache, other than putting it down to puberty they are saying it must be an abdominal headache but they said they run in the family. It cannot be puberty as to have these every other day for a year or so is just too much. She just cannot get on with her life and spends half the time saying she had stomach ache and feels sick. I am going to ask for a scan but not sure whether I will just get fobbed off again. I have an appointment in a week. I have to do a poo diary!! ask for referal to paed and to headache clinic at local hospital . GOSH has one.

That doesn't sound right to me. Would something like cystopurin help with the acidic urine and feeling sore? Obv you need to get to the bottom of things too. Ask for a referral to the hospital?

How much does she drink?

Dd was very similar uti symptoms but no uti

Was seen by community paediatrician and was advised to up fluid levels -I had thought she was drinking enough but she now has 1.5ltr a day and touch wood no problems -that was just after her 11th birthday

Definitely increase the amount of water she drinks. Try and avoid orange and other citrus fruits which wont help infact they may make it worse.

Having said that I have heard that cranberry juice can be very effective if indeed it is cystitis type thing.

You also need to make sure she is wiping correctly when she has been to the loo. Always from front to back to avoid transmitting bacteria.

my son was about 11 when the tummy migraine stopped. It wasnt anything to do with UTIs though just a general feeling of sickness which thankfully now is over.

Yes she was in hospital the other day, got rushed in was being sick and it was all blood. She saw a paediatrician about it and they thought she had a nose bleed while she was asleep, woke up and then vomited it all up. They said that she will grow out of the tummy migraine but I asked about the acid problem and they could not come up with anything. She has protein and blood in her urine but no infection. We just cannot get to the bottom of it but I am trying to get her to drink more water and to be honest in the last month or so she has just drunk water but it has not made it any better. I suppose I shall just have to wait and see but I am going to ask the GP to refer her. Thanks for all your posts, I really really appreciate it.

As others have said, do encourage increase in fluid intake as dehyration can cause headaches. Also, keep plenty of high fibre food, as food is moving through the system quicker. It's also worth encouraging snacks between meals as sometimes sugar levels can affect how you feel and cause headaches, ie fruit, breadsticks, toast. Obviously you need to keep seeing the doctor if you are concerned, but the above certainly won't do any harm. Hope she starts to feel better soon.

Hi. I would ask for her to be referred to a paediatric urologist so that they can check out the blood and protein. How much protein is there? My son had this and they said as it was only a trace it wasn't significant although he didn't have any blood, just the protein.

As well as chasing referrals from your GP I would recommend taking her to a nutritionist naturopath. Where do you live? They will test her for viruses, bacteria, protozoa and everything else. I can recommend one in Richomond/london.

My daughter is 6 she suffers from protein in urine and goes toilet often she has been for many tests and is waiting for an ultra sound on her kidneys to see if she has kidney problems which I recommend you insist having done although my daughter is currently having headaches Laying in more and complaining of stomach ache you say your daughter has a sore front what do you mean as my daughter has scratched all the front of her stomachs where it's itchy thanks defiantly get her tested for kidney problems one of the questions they asked is does her feet and face swell up at all

As Speedy said, it is important that doctors do tests to check kidney function, as blood and protein in urine can be a sign of kidney problems. My DD has kidney problems and she is currently being treated with steroids, she had high amounts of protein in her urine (3+), along with frequent tummy aches and swollen eyelids. We were fobbed off for ages until we saw a GP who was vaguely familiar with DD's issues and referred us for further blood tests.
