My baby has sneezed up brown stained liquid from his nose

My 4 month old baby has just sneezed up light brown stained liquid from his nose. He is breast fed and therefore has nothing going into his system that is this colour. He was also born 7 weeks premature, so is therefore 12 weeks corrected age. He is very nasally when he's asleep. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be?

It might be blood? Sometimes when babies have colds the inside of the nose can become irritated and bleed. The skin is very thin there and easily broken with rubbing and wiping. It would look brownish rather than bright red if in the snot.

If you are worried call the ooh service.

It might be blood from a cracked nipple, or the start of mastitis. Do you feel ok?
