dd glucose and ketones in urine

Im looking for advice.
DD is four and my middle child. My two boys rarely get sick and if they do it dosent knock a bother out of them.
DD on the other hand is hit hard with croup and chest infections.

Anyway all three have a head cold and as usual DD is the sickest. She is spiking a temp but in ok form- very tired yesterday, but better form today.

Last night she complained of a tummy ache. This is a recurring complaint- not all the time but a couple of times a month maybe. Ive put it down to constipation which she is sometimes prone to. Last night I decided to dipstick her urine in case she had a UTI- GP gave me a bottle after she had a UTI last year.

No blood/protein but +++ glucose.
I tested twice today +++ ketones each time- no glucose.
Her appetite isnt great with the cold but she is eating bits and pieces.
There is a strong family history of type 2 diabetes- I was insulin dependent for each pregnancy.
Im quietly worried here- GP wont open till tuesday and Ill bring her in then but Id love some thoughts from people in the know.

In kids the kidneys sometimes get a bit more 'leaky' for glucose when they are unwell, so glucose gets passed through when it normally wouldn't. Ketones can happen when she has not eaten too much.

Otoh, she could have a serious problem with her glucose metabolism and needs a glucose BLOOD test. Tbh, if it was me, I'd take her to the nearest hospital with a paediatric department.

Could be something, could be nothing. Get her checked.

Has she been losing weight at the rate of knots? Been absurdely thirsty? And weeing more than humanely possible? All that would point toward diabetes - far more likely Type 1 in a child as young as her.
If she was generally a bit unwell and feverish, might be nothing.

I would not be comfortable waiting 'til Tuesday - new presentation of paediatric diabetes is an emergenc. I am not saying that is what it is, but it's what needs to be ruled out.

If there is no glucose now then probably not a major concern. Glucose and ketone together would be more worrying. How is she in herself? Excessive thirst? Any doubts give the out of hours service a call for advice.

She still has a temp but much better form today. thirsty but her nose is blocked.
She pee's a lot. always has done- montessori teacher and childminder have both commented on it.
Ill ring my GP. he is not on duty but very obliging. see what he says.

My dd2 (3) has type 1 diabetes and one of the first indicators of this was when we thought she had a uti, kept taking her to gp and urine samples had glucose in them.

It might be worth going to out of hours and getting them to dip her urine/possibly do a finger prick blood glucose test?

Don't want to worry you unecessarily but wouldn't want youu to go through what we did as dd was ill for a while before diagnosis as doctors kept dismissing glucose as 'contamination' in samples

I rang the GP. he said to check her blood sugars with the monitor I have from last pregnancy when she is asleep.
He took it seriously and said if readings are in anyway abnormal to bring her down to him. otherwise he will see us tuesday morning.
Said the same thing really as ye have said here- could be the virus or diabetes

Would def be a good idea to check her blood glucose that would give you an indication immediately if it was diabetes as it would be above noirmal levels (dd2 was 25 when finally tested at gps and 32 once we had got to a+e an hour later).

Dd2 is doing ok, 4 injections a day but has never complained she is very brave we are lucky. It can be tough but is manageable. Have a few issues with frequent hypos but we treat them quickly and all is fine soon after.

Def do the finger prick and if it's raised i'd go to A&E....I got really dangerously ill when I got diagnosed with type 1 diabetes as a kid because there was a delay in the diagnosis!

BUT it doesn't sound like she has too many of the tell tale signs..i was mega thirsty, like ridiculously so..also extremely tired and lot a fair bit of weight... was very very unwell which it doesn't sound like your DD is

My son is now thirteen but was diagnosed aged seven. He's doing well, has a pump and glucose sensor.

Have you done your DD's BM?

My dd had had a raised temp and was having 'little accidents' so Dr tested her urine and found glucose. He ordered a blood test and from what I'd read online while waiting for the results, I had almost convinced myself it was diabetes but the blood test came back clear. Further reading suggests, as someone further upthread said, some people leak glucose for no particular reason.
