Dd has a temp, but says she's chilly...do I wrap her up or not?

She's 6 and a half, and has a temp of 38.3. She has been "feeling poorly" all day, and says her head and neck hurt, but not a sore throat. She says she's cold, but has a temp. She wants me to wrap her in a blanket with a hot water bottle...but not sure I ought to do this? Any advice?

Nothing wrong with giving her a blanket (as long as it's not a really warm one) but have you given her some medicine to bring the temperature down? Don't give her a hot water bottle.

I've given her calpol, and the temp is still high. She's on the sofa watching TV, and I'm making sure she drinks lots.

Cal pol & as much fluid as she can take, thin sheet or blanket so she has feeling of comfort. If neck pain isn't eased by pain relief please get advice. Get well Dd

Yes, the calpol should help the temperature and neck pain, but if not, phone out of hours GP.

Because her temp is higher than usual, she'll feel cold and hence why wants the blanket. If hse has calpol etc, her temp will start to come down and she'll probably say she feels rather warm. As she's 6, I would give her the blanket and then you'll find she'll shrug it off once the calpol starts working. But echo what other say. Keep an eye on her and ensure you call nhs direct if she becomes unresponsive or cant stand the light. As she's 6, she'll probably be able to tell you.

If you are worried about the temperature give her a hot water bottle filled with cold water to put between her thighs. She can also have a thin cover so she feels looked after and snuggly.

Thanks all. She had plenty of dinner, and ice cream for pud! Her temp came down to a respectable 36 point something, and she's gone to bed and fallen straight asleep. If she wakes in the night, I'll take her temp again. Hopefully an odd 24 hr thing.
