Eczema and how best to apply emolient & steroid cream

I feel like I should really know the answer to this as my DS has suffered from atopic eczema since he was 6 months old and he is now 6. However, I keep getting conflicting advice and, shamefully, I can't even remember what the Dermatologist's view is on it.

I generally apply the steroid cream (Mometasone at the moment) first on any inflamed areas and then wait half an hour or so before smothering him in Epaderm. However, some people say to apply emolient first, wait half an hour or so and then apply the steroid on top of the moisturised skin.

Does it matter as long as there is a half hour gap between applying one or the other?
