DD stuck a pea sized plastic bead up her vagina.

I didn't see it happen but DH says he saw her do it. I called NHS direct who said best course of action is to get GP to check it out, who in turn suggested a visit to A&E. Waited for 4 hours for DD to be be briefly examined by an embarrased looking junior doctor who also consulted a pead consultant. They concluded it's probably not there any more and if it is she'll probably get an infection and if this happends we should bring her back. Should I have insisted they X ray her? Am I being a little over anxious? just don't like the idea of her having to go through pain because they didn't x ray and try and remove. Has anyone else had this happen?

Has she done a poo? That might sort of push it out.

A plastic bead is unlikely to show up on X-ray and you don't necessarily want to expose her to unnecessary radiation. So if not visible on exam they are a little limited.

lougle · 22/03/2013 22:24

If it's pea size, it would likely wash out if you give her a bath. Have you considered doing that?

TeggieCampbeggBlegg · 22/03/2013 22:25

How old?

PacificDogwood · 22/03/2013 22:27

What is it with children and stuff and orifices??

Don't worry too much; it'll likely come out.
An XR is of no use for a plastic bead, it won't show up.

Just wait and see, it'll come.

LittlePushka · 22/03/2013 22:28

I would have thought her closed cervix would mean that it would be "contained" until it came out naturally. Would her hymen not prevent it going high up in any event? Would a quick word with your GP gynae specialist help?

Plastic does not usually show up on an x ray.

MintyyAeroEgg · 22/03/2013 22:30

Where does hospital think it has gone if it is not there any more? Pea sized is quite large. I'm surprised it couldn't be found. How come dh saw her do it?

PacificDogwood · 22/03/2013 22:32

It cannot 'go' anywhere - it has likely fallen out, I'd imagine.

OwnedByACockerSpaniel · 22/03/2013 22:35

In young girls it really has nowhere to go except back out when she strains for a no2.It has either cone out already or will cone out.

MintyyAeroEgg · 22/03/2013 22:41

I am a 50 year old woman who has had two children and I would be quite worried if a pea sized bead just disappeared in my vagina quite frankly! Because that would suggest it had somehow got through my cervix into my womb. I would be amazed if that could happen.

Thanks for all replies. DD is 3 1/2. Happened this am, DH was at dining table, DD playing near by in nightie no knickers, must had found said bead and decided it would fun to put it up her front bottom! DH caught her as she doing this and asked her what she was doing, when she said 'it's stuck daddy'. To be honest I don't know what to think, a&e dr said hymen is in tact so I guess it can't have gone far? if it's there at all.

Vaginas are fascinating things at that age. It'll come out, I'm sure.

crashdoll · 23/03/2013 10:00

I assumed, she has pooed since then? I imagine the pressure would push it out.

PacificDogwood · 23/03/2013 10:03

Is now the time to tell you about the 3 year old I was had dealings with who was found to have 17 cherry pips up her vagina Grin? She thought it was a tidy way to dispose of them... they did all come out. Eventually. The developing discharge actually helped.

I bet your little girl's bead is long gone....
