DS1 shivering uncontrollably but no fever

DS1 (11) was off school for two days this week with a heavy cold and hacking cough. By Thursday he was well enough to return to school, though still had a cough and was fine all day. Today I got a phone call from him at the end of school asking me to pick him up (he normally walks). I could hardly understand him on the phone as he was shivering so violently. Brought him home and he's now in bed, saying he feels a bit better but he's still very cold. The puzzling thing is he doesn't have a temperature. He said that it came on very suddenly 20 mins before the end of school, that he could feel his concentration slowing down and he felt as if he was slurring his speech, then began shivering. I've given him paracetamol and he's had a drink. Do you think I should just watch him carefully or is a visit to the Drs in order?

I hate this on a friday afternoon. Any other day i'd say wait it out but we have no real out of hours so i'd phone GP for advice.

DH on way home - DS1's younger brother is autistic and there's no way I could get him to the surgery as well if they say come in. Will ring now.

Update if anyone's interested - temp shot up shortly after last post and I ended up taking him down to surgery (our lovely GP said he'd finished for day but would see him before he went home). Diagnosed with chest infection and given ABs. Two doses later and he was up and running again! First time he's been properly ill for 5 years, so was a bit worrying, especially as he was so rambly and had a blotchy sort of rash on his back after the temp went up.
