Vicks on the soles of her feet......

Does anyone know if this urban myth/legend actually works? I have two DCs hacking and coughing all night last night, high temps, sneezing etc....it's been doing the round of the house since Christmas and quite frankly it's doing my nut in!!

I read somewhere that if you smear vapo-rub on the soles of feet and put on socks it soothes the coughing.....can anyone verify this? It it worth the risk of wakening them both up to experiment???

Works a treat for my ds. No idea how or why but it works!
Hope it does the trick for yours too

Hmm....i thought it was a load of old bunkum when i first heard about it.....do you think it's worth the risk??

I've heard a lot of people say it works, I've only tried it once and dd had a massive croup attach but that was coinCedence I think. still haven't been brave enough to try again though

geminigirl · 20/03/2013 08:56

Ok, it worked almost immediately but only lasted about 4 hours, still, it was worth it. Elder DC was mighty confused about the socks this morning though.....

I have had 3 children with terrible coughs. I tried the Vicks thing and I cant say it made any difference but I didn't put socks on top. Is that part essential?

SissySpacekAteMyHamster · 20/03/2013 09:03

I put socks on them in case they get out of bed and slip around everywhere as we have tiled floors!

TooYappy · 20/03/2013 09:05

This is not just a Mumsnet tip.

I seen a Gp in a crappy magazine recommending and Mum do the same to her DD.

Maybe the Editor of said crappy magazine is also a MNetter.

I've done thins with snufflebaby this morning on DS3, I figured its worth a go and his baby grow is covering his feet anyway.
Is it because it absorbs quicker through the feet or something like that?

twojumpingbeans · 20/03/2013 09:08

It works! For us anyway, also have heard that cutting open a clove of garlic and rubbing this on the soles of the feet works wonders.

caramelwaffle · 20/03/2013 09:15

As tjb says, garlic - especially organic - rubbed on the soles of feet is quite good in helping along the bodies healing process.

If rubbed on your feet, the smell will be noticable from your mouth within a few hours.

mistletoeoak · 20/03/2013 12:51

Going to try this this, always prefer natural remedies, will scuttle off and find the garlic - thank you!

geminigirl · 20/03/2013 22:52

Ahhhhh, is garlic supposed to be good for coughs/colds too? I'll try anything...vicks in situ again tonight.
