Is there any point applying ice four hours after the bump?

Please help. DS got a nasty whack to the shin with a hard cricket ball. But that was about four and a half hours ago. His shin is sore and swollen now. Will ice still help? If not, is there anything I can do for him?

Ta in advance for any advice

Yes, you can apply ice even hours after injury. If you have a bag of frozen peas it's even better as it can adapt to the shape of the shin.
Arnica, both cream and pills , can be given/applied to young children
