What are the usual signs of appendicitis?

Ds2 had to come home early, he's 5, school just said he wasn't well but didn't say why as the relevant secretary had gone home.

He said his tummy hurts, he hadn't been sick though, and he was coughing and sniffing on the way home - his big bro just got over a nasty cold with temp. I'm assuming it is that, but he's gone to sleep on the sofa, has a temp of 38.9 (before calpol - given at 3pm) and says his tummy has been hurting all day since morning playtime.
He cried a lot when we got home.
I'm just wondering, it might be the temp making him feel like it hurts - or should I be aware of any other signs it's something more serious?

i have had appendicitis. it started off with going off food and a stomach ache. the stomach ache started in the middle but got gradually worse and ended up being on my right side only. i could not face food and slept a lot then i started being sick (obv this was just stomach acid though as had no food :-/) pain got increasingly bad and then i got a fever and the shakes by which time i was in hospital waiting for the results. i had my appendix out later that night. symptoms had started 2 days before though. keep a close eye on the stomach pain hun and ask him where it is etc if he still has it tomorrow i would get him checked over. hope he is ok! xx

He still has a temp but his tummy seems to be better...he';s been on the calpol all night
