Ongoing ear discharge - Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media

Hi guys,

my daughter is almost two, and has had ear discharge on-and-off for six weeks. It all started from a burst eardrum.

We've had four trips to the GP, four courses of ineffective antibiotics and are due to have our fifth trip to the GP on Friday.

I'm normally very relaxed/confident when it comes to my daughter's health, but am starting to get a bit worried about hearing loss.

Has anyone else experienced this condition? Any advice?

Talk to them about using ear drops in the ear instead of oral antibiotics. Some antibiotics are not suitable for this but others are. Our ENT surgeon told us to insist on topical drops and not oral antibiotics when DD had her gromets in her ears in the event she got an infection in her ears while they were still in.

I was going to give the same advice as beautifulgirls. My daughter has had two episodes of ongoing ear discharge that didn't respond to oral antibiotics. My daughter is also under an ENT as she previously had grommets and he advised the GPS to prescribe drops that go directly in the ear which cured the problem.

My daughters ENT did a letter to the GPS telling them to prescribe the drops for the ear in such circumstances.

I'd also ask if it was worth taking a swab.

Hi guys, thanks a lot. We've seen the GP twice since that last post, and have a referral to an ENT. Ear continues to discharge horrible pus in the meantime :(

GP prescribed some different, oral antibiotics. These would be her fifth course!! None of the others made a difference si not sure if its worth her taking these.

Will try to get topical drops. Any more advice appreciated!!!
