3 yr old just wants to sleep, has been asleep pretty much since Friday.

DS has a cold, which usually doesn't really bother him. For weeks now he has been very weepy, crying very easily, but I just put it down to his age.

This week he has been so tired, asking to go to bed early etc. Yesterday he got up for an hour, then fell asleep on sofa for two hours. Woke up for 20 mins, thn asked to go to bed an slept the rest of the day. We kept checking on him, and it wa like trying to wake a teenager up.

He hasn't eaten anything, although been drinking juice. Same today. Doesn't want to get out of bed or eat anything. He's very weepy.

He doesn't have a temp. He was like this a little after Christmas with sleep (he isn't usually a sleeper!). Is it likely just a virus?

Do you have a carbon monoxide detector?

I'd get him checked out to be honest. Call ooh and explain he's very difficult to rouse!! He's still only little and children can crash very quickly. It's great he's drinking but that's not normal.

Agree With above poster! Check your carbon monoxide detected if u have one and if u don't then get one!!!

I would also get him checked out, it may well.be just a virus but best to be safe.

We have carbon monoxide detector. I will ring them. I feel like they know me by name I run so much between him and dd!

Definitely get him checked out. Recent thread on here had unrouseable child and it turned out to be serious. Dont delay.

In a way, it is a bit worrying that he hasn't got a temperature. If he had a temperature, you would suspect flu or another virus.

Having excluded carbon monoxide you will probably need to make an appointment with either your GP or take him to OOH or A&E to have him checked out. They probably need to measure his oxygen levels, take blood etc. So in a way going to A&E is the quicker route as your GP will have to refer you to a hospital to have blood test in a young child.

Important to get to the bottom of this though ...

NHS direct say it sounds viral. He has developed a rash thi afternoon, although had been slightly more awake. They say it is probably a virus and if still concerned take him to GP tomorrow.

what sort of rash - does it fade when pressed?

You have done the glass test on the rash? If he seems worse oryou can't rouse him when he is asleep just go to a&e with him xx

Recent thread about difficult to wake child was serious. Without wishing to alarm you, he had unusual presentation of chicken pox involving his brain. He is ok now I understand but op was v glad mners urged her to seek medical help.

I agree you should get him checked out - and I'm really not one to rush to the doctor at the drop of a hat.

I would be taking him up to OOH personally. 3 days asleep at that age is very unusual IMO.

Hmm, one of the children at his childminder had chicken pox recently. The rash isn't meningitis, it looks more like a nettle sting if that makes sense. Our OOH is NHS Direct, you go through same switchboard.

Will take him to get checked out.

Please do get him checked out OP. The worst that can happen if he's fine is you've put your mind at rest. Doctors know how hard it can be to tell a virus from something serious in a small child.

When my toddler son was excessively sleepy, the doctor sent me straight to A&E where he was admitted, given a spinal tap and diagnosed with a serious infection that required a stay in hospital.

That was one time of the zillions of times he's visited the doctor with a genuine virus. So it isn't the most likely scenario. It can happen though.

It's worth getting checked anyway.

My w3 year old did this one weekend, and has now finally shifted the cough he's had for weeks. Hope its similar for you.

Dd had a virus a few weeks ago, no temp but didn't eat for a week and slept for 3 days. Always worth getting them to the drs at such a young age though

Dd had a bug just like this, slept for about 4 days, not eating much, temp started on day 5. Took her to doc on day 7 who said virus, back to doc on day 8 when we had spiking temp, headache and aversion to light, this doc took it more seriously far more checks etc. DD is now on anti biotics as she said it was likely that there had been a virus that turned into an infection. She's now a lot better, but it took a long time. From having spoken to other people there is a nasty virus going round that just makes you want to sleep a lot

They said viral, they have seen a lot of it. He is slightly better today, but still weepy.
