Is there any over the counter medicine which will actually stop DD's persistent dry cough?

Tixylix dry cough medicine didn't touch her last night.

She has a constant croupy cough (not so worried about the croupy bit, as she's 7, and I don't think there is risk of her breathing being restricted).

But it was constant coughing last night. We are both exhausted this morning.

Have you tried the vapour rub on the feet thing? Cover with socks obviously. It seems to work for a lot of people on here.

I did put some on her chest last night - but tonight it will be liberally applied to her feet!

Dd1 has had this as well, she coughed so much a couple of nights ago that she was sick all over her bed, which is another parenting first for us.

The only thing that helps a bit is the purple strepsils with the anaesthetic in, and piriton in an attempt to knock her out.

Is Medised discontinued now?

I have piriton -t she hates the taste, but will try it if I have to.

Cough med is useless, pholochodine works a bit, but even that isn't wonderful.

There was one that worked, testing drug addicts extracted the active ingredient, it was banned

As a serial cougher I really don't care if they all poison themselves I want it back.

ds had a constant gooey sounding cough and dd had a dry cough, both had been going on since they got a really bad cold in feb I kept waiting for it to go.

turns out they both have asthma

you might want to think about going to the gp if it has been going on for a while

She might need steroids or an inhaler, get her checked.

For short lived but bad coughs we give calpol and piriton. Some people swear by de/humidifiers ( can't remember which!) but I think it depends on the type of cough.

Honey seems to help my dd, and taking a sip of a drink when she wants to cough. Sucking boiled sweets helps me, and seemed to help dd until I got scared she will choke on them. I have had years of thickly coughs. The only thing that really works for me is mega strong throat lozenges whic h contain lignocaine. This anaesthetises my throat enough to briefly stop the cough

It only started yesterday, and she's definitely caught it off ex-asthmatic (yes, really!) DH who kept me up the two previous nights, so no worries about it being asthma.

I'm used to dealing with croup and got out the humidifier (I know, I know, - it's probably full of bacteria which will kill us).

So, Piriton, and Vicks on her feet are ready on stand-by.

Ibuprofen syrup works best for ds3 who is really prone to bad coughs.

DD(4) has had many nights of relentless coughing in her life and by far the best thing for her has always been the humidifier.

Pholcodine. They sell it over the counter at any pharmacy. The only thing worked on a cough that DS had that lasted for about 4 weeks when nothing else would work. Also a spoonful of honey with black pepper - sound bizarre but it does ease a cough.

It's the codeine in the pholcodeine which suppresses the cough. A little word of warning though. If she is coughing up anything at all you prob don't want to suppress it or she nay end up with a nasty infection.

We buy at Holland and Barret "Propolis herbal medicine winter wellness" produced by Comvita. You can also buy it on amazon and other on line stores. The syrop is made of honey, propolis and some vinegar. I think there are different flavours but we buy non-flavoured one.

Milk with honey is also good for coughs.

Usually we also use nasal drops like children's Otrivine. Thy help with breathing. Hope your DD is better now.
