Eye infection in 19 month-old - please advise

My daughter has had an infection in both eyes since Thursday. Following pharmacist advice, I have been bathing her eyes in cooled boiled salted water.
Today I thought she looked worse as her eye looks bloodshot so I got some chloramphenicol drops. The doctor advised adminstering them 4 times a day. She had one round at 5.30 pm and second round at 8.30 pm and is now screaming in pain after waking up.
Should I be concerned? I know that if I take antibiotics myself, the infection seems to get worse while it is fighting the initial doses of antibiotics so is this all that is happening?
While I have typed this message, she has stopped crying, but I am still concerned....and now she is crying again....
I have just given her some Calpol as I can't find any mention of it being contraindicated.

She may be allergic to the drops, i am allergic to some of the eye drops and it makes my eyes burn. However i usually react straight away, so i guess it may not be. I have heard that breast milk is really good with eye infections, so if you are breast feeding you could try drops of that. Also i would only wipe away the gunk when it is coming out of the eye, other wise i would leave it to sort it self out as it can be made worse if you continually wipe at the eye.

Aaaaa poor baby. Conjuctivitis can be so sore so anything put in the eye can be a bit stingy for the first couple of doses. You should start to see some improvement within the next 24-48 hours though. You're fine to give Calpol and also ibuprofen if she's okay with it. (pharmacist)

Thank you both so much. She has perked up now with the Calpol - I will put her to bed again soon and hopefully all will be well. I still have some milk left although I've finished bf, so I will def try that too.

My 13 mo DS had an eye infection last week and he woke screaming from every nap/sleep -I think its because his eyelids were stuck together and he got scared as couldn't open his eyes Sad. it took about 3-4 days for the drops to clear it up. Hope she gets better soon.
