Normal to ask parent to collect a DC from school who has a cold?

Maybe this is more AIBU, but this is something I have to do quite a lot - the school phone me and say he has a runny nose and can I collect him. DS is 6 and goes to a high performing mainstream school, he has SN (behavioural problems, learning disability, hyperactivity, asd traits and so on). Today I've collected him and once home he is as right as rain although with a runny nose. I'm getting rather sick and tired of it. Can the school do this?

I don't know. But I would be annoyed. DS1 has had a bad cold for what seems like months. He has had one day off - he was nearly sent home the day before, but they checked his temp and it was normal. He has got through boxes and boxes of tissues, and it has not been a problem from that perpsective.

He is pretty fed up though. Me too. I have had the same cold.

Did they ask him if he felt unwell? Our school calls and asks what you want to do (unless they have a high temp or something serious). Maybe they we worried about other kids getting sick before Christmas.

I didn't mention that I'd kept him at home on Monday when his cold was at its worst, this is just the tail-end, the last snotty encore. When I collected him I whipped out a thermometer and took his temperature in front of the TA - it was normal. I took him home to save their moaning. I thought kids were only kept off school with D&V bugs, measles, high temperatures etc. My DS is very prone to a runny nose anyway. He was very naughty at school yesterday and I'm wondering if it's a relief for them not to have him in the class (starting to get paranoid).

Everyone there has a cold at the moment - me included. I don't think they asked if he was unwell, they just looked at his runny nose.

You're right - everyone around me is spottery at the moment! If he has no temperature, isn't feeling poorly and using a hanky, then I think they were being over cautious.

Oh and the snotty nose thing can go on for weeks and weeks.

i think.if he doesnt have a temp and seems fine in himself they are beimg ridiculous!!!

i would be asking for their policy on sick children/semding children home and complaining!

A friend of mine is always being asked to collect her son from Reception class for a snotty.nose or a bad cough - he also has SN in a mainstream school.

Im wondering if it's laziness on their part to just send certain kids home at the earliest opportunity.

Their sick policy is online, going to have a look at it and then might compose a letter. Not happy.

Depends I think on how bad it is, colds can make you feel crap.

And if the school has a lot of SN kids, maybe some of them have physical disabilities that make colds a lot harder work than for 'normal' folk?

Ok ignore me. Sounds a bit OTT. Our school refuses to send a poorly child home if they can avoid it, unless they're throwing up or something.

Yanbu. Our primary school are very quick to phone and get them taken out for things which probably aren't necessary.

And yet when dd went to secondary school there was a big talk about not staying away for sniffles (which I agree with).

We might as well scrap compulsory education if children are going to be sent home from school every time they have a snotty nose.

That is absolutely ridiculous.

I didn't see anything much on their website, will contact them and see what they mean by "unwell". Unwell to my mind is no energy, dozing and listless (my ds is currently jumping up and down, shrieking. Like some of you have mentioned, I have a horrible suspicion it's SN related (his challenging and eccentric behaviour). Whislingwaves my ds has been removed from classes when Ofsted have visited - disgraceful.

Ds would never be at school if I kept him off with a cold.
