What treament for black tooth after injury?

Morning all

DD1 had a fall a month or so ago when at the park. We saw a Dentist at the time as her gum, inner lip and tooth were damaged- we were told to keep an eye out for a gum boil or discolouration of the tooth.

We have an appointment later today as her front two teeth are darkening.

I'm wondering what treatment, if any, will be needed. Does anyone have any experience of a similar situation please?

I'm terrified that they will want to take them out, DD is only 2.11 and already a very nervous little thing! I'm going to have to resort to bribary just to get her in the chair without a panic attack.

Sorry about this fluffacloud. My son (3) fell on his tooth at school six weeks ago. Apparently it is dead and will probably go black although it hasn't yet. The dentist said they will try to keep it in but if it gets infected then it will have to come out so I have to keep an eye out for abcesses. I don't think the discolouration in itself is a problem - just the infection. I fell on my tooth as a child and it went black but I kept it till it fell out naturally at 6 or 7.

So I am hoping the tooth can stay in but accept that it may go black which is a shame but better than having it extracted.

Ds had a tooth that became brown when he was about 4. Nothing was done to it. The dentist said that it was dead and that we needed to keep an eye on it as they were more prone to abscesses than other teeth. However, so long as nothing was wrong, it was best to keep it there as a kind of place saver until the adult tooth came through as normal. The tooth fell out when he was about 7 and he has a lovely normal adult tooth now.

I'm not bothered if it darkens, as long as it doesn't need to be extracted or worse root canal - bloody Google scared the life out of me when I read that!

I feel really badly when young and amounts other injuries bashed my 2 front teeth whilst also managing to get them piercing through both lips which required hospital treatment. Teeth went black but dentist said they were probably bruised rather than dead. Guess what he was right!
I now still have perfect white teeth even though at the time both went black for a very long time.
I have also since learnt about bone bruises through experience which hurt & take a very long time to heal... Originally I just thought it was the soft bits that bruise.

This happened to my ds2 when he was 1. The tooth has gradually darkened (he is 4.6 now) and he has 3 monthly check ups, but no problem beyond the cosmetic so far (and that doesn't bother me or him at all - just part of who he is )

My daughter went over the handle bars of a trike aged about 3. Her front tooth went grey and stayed like that until it fell out at the usual age. The dentist just kept an eye on it. Hope the appointment went well.

My DD banged her front tooth and it went black, the dentish said it wasnt' broken or dead otherwise there would be a lump above it in the gum and he said it would just be bruised. A month or two later it returned to a beautiful white tooth, I couldnt believe it!

This happened to my dd2 - scared myself silly after googling it, but it was all fine.

Her tooth went a grey colour, I phoned the dentist who said that it was very common and not to worry. After several months the colour had faded - so I think it was basically like a bruise. The tooth came out as normal and her new tooth was absolutely fine.
