Lump in DS's cheek. Any one had anything similar?

Hi all

My 8 year old DS informed me this morning that he has a lump on his cheek. He says he has had it since Sunday. It is just about where the top teeth meet the bottom teeth (jaw junction) and feels about 2.5 cm's in diameter and round. It seems to be attached to something as it is not "free moving". You can feel it form the outside of his cheek. It is painful to the touch but is not red or hot. My DH says it looks swollen on the inside too, but it looks ok on the inside to me.

I have spoken to my surgery this am, but I am unable to get an appointment until Fri afternoon! Apart from the discomfort of the lump, my DS has no temp, but when I asked, he says his throat is a little sore.

Should I wait til Fri or take him to the walk in centre today, or am I overreacting?

TIA>

get to the dentist

Dentists have much more training and experience in mouths, and see about six thousand per year more than the average GP

50p says it is a blocked salivary duct.

Hi Piglet

We went to the dentist on Fri, which was obviously before this started. Do you think I should go straight to the dentist and don't bother with the walk in centre?

I'd phone the dentist first.

did he have an injection?

Hamkin · 18/09/2012 14:29

Hi again

No, He didn't have an injection, just a check up. Everything was fine.

Hi Piglet

Just phoned the dentist. They have made an appointment for 9am tomorrow, so hopefully it is what you said!

Thank you for your help.

Any news?

Oh hi Piglet! Sorry for the late response. The dentist does not know what it is so has referred us to the hospital for x-rays. I took him to the walk in centre and the nurse there was also unsure. I finally got an appointment at the local surgery and the doc said it is a swollen gland? Not sure about this as I was unaware there were glands in your upper cheek? Then again, I am no GP!

In the past couple of days, the size has decreased but its still there. GP advised to monitor it and return if it has not gone in two weeks time.

Thanks for your concern. X
