Whooping cough: can any other coughs cause a whooping sound?

Posting here as I have a long and illustrious history of diagnosing nasty conditions amongst my nearest and dearest :o.

Over the past couple of days DS (21mo) has developed a slightly productive sounding cough with a clear whooping sound between coughs. He's had no fever/cold etc that I've noticed and the bouts only last about 20 secs so it doesn't seem serious but what I don't understand is - does a whoop only occur with whooping cough? Is a definite diagnostic symptom? Or does it only appear in whooping cough and make the lack of any other symptoms irrelevant?

Thanks for any thoughts.

If he had his jabs at 2, 3 and 4 months I would of thought it unlikely to be whooping cough?

DH has it at the moment and the cough is choking, really choking, red face and can't get your breath type of cough not just a whoop.

Croup has a cough very similar to a whoop.

Yes, croup has a whoop-like sound DS has had something similar twice where during the night I would swear he's had whooping cough but much improved the next day. Try steaming - for a DC that age close the bathroom door, turn on the shower hot and sit on the toilet with him for a while. It really does help.

Parapertussis ? like whooping cough but less severe.

Vvaccination is now believed not to afford total protection from whooping cough. Trip to gp to put yr mind at rest?

He doesn't seem to be any worse or better today. I've had a listen to croup coughs on YouTube and it sounds very different. A normal cough (rather than barking) and a whoop sound rather than a scratchy in breath in between. He's not coughing very frequently though and the coughing fits are only lasting about 20-30 secs so I'm going to monitor him a bit more.

As Narmada says the jabs don't offer full protection, and apparently it's going around at the moment.
