Ds 3- colds, coughs, wheezing, shortness of breathe

My DS has always suffered with wheezing we have inhalors which seems to help a bit. Since May it seems like every 3 weeks it starts with a cold then it changes to cough, wheezing and breathing hard. Around 2 months ago he was really bad and this was a chest infection which didn't clear with first lot of antibiotics but better after second lot.
He is back to coughing/wheezing today.

Has anyone have any experience of this with their little ones?
I feel very anxious all the time and useless as nothing i can do for him. The GPs just keep giving me inhalors but seems to me it has been going on too long.

Any advise/experiences would be great x

What inhalers is he taking?

If it is ongoing I would be asking for a chest xray just to make sure there is no residual infection

He has Salbutamol and Atrovent (Ipratropium bromide). I have only used the latter 1 once as this was prescribed last time. Are these the usual ones?

I feel really unsure when to give them and what the differences are, the GP just seems to give them to you and say when they need them but finding it hard to judge.
Before the chect infection he used to have a bad wheezy day and then cough gets more productive and gradually better. Have to see how he is tomorrow but the chest xray sounds like i good idea. Thanks for the reply
