Help! 20mo temp 39.4 - 40 all last night and today, will NOT go down

Have been alternating calpol and baby nurofen, stripped her to nappy, tried cool cloth on forehead but dd screamed so much it was less use than no cloth. GP this morning said chest, ears clear, dh has terrible cough and sore throat at present and dd's throat rather red so probably culprit.

Please share tips on lowering fever though as it's such a strain on her poor little system! She is still bfing and she has been feeding pretty much constantly all night and day and I fear about to do all night again (glad she's getting the fluids though.)

Also how in the hell does anyone manage to get a urine sample from a non-potty-trained girl toddler? Dd has form, too; waited in a and e for 3 hours once with wailing beetroot sitting on foil dish. Left weeless at the end of it Angry Am reasonably sure it's not a UTI as she doesn't seem to have painful or smelly wees but need to rule it out. How to get piss into pot, short of vigorously wringing nappy? Please help!

TBH if its not going down at all I would be calling the OOH GP to get them to check her over again. A temperature shouldn't be that high for so long.

No hints for the urine sample though I have never managed to get one from DS that didn't involve chasing him around with the pot and catching it when he finally weed!

Have you got a travel cot? Could she sleep in the coolest room in house - even if downstairs? Feel for you and her - its not nice when they're so poorly. Maybe a luke warm cloth instead of a cold cloth would be more comfortable..

Not sure about the wee sample - tried but failed to get one from my son at a similar age - could you go back to the doctor and say you're struggling..

Hope you have a better night.

Dont mean to panic you but if it was me I would be taking her to a+e. And DONT LET THEM FOB YOU OFF. Thats too long with a temp. My cousin was similar at a similar age and hes fine now but he was very poorly because it went on so long.

Also, they can give you a liner for her nappy to catch a sample.

Thanks all very much. I think you're right and it is getting to the point where she needs to be seen again. Bloody hell Friday night a and e [joysofmotherhoodface] great news about nappy liner though!

Do you have a peads A and E locally? that will probably be much better especially with it being friday night.

Our hospital won't use liners or anything for samples as they can interfere with the sample apparenatly

A&E if I were you. They have little bags that can be taped onto babies bits. Poor little scrap. I remember the feeling well with mine. Do get her checked.

ValiumQueen · 04/08/2012 14:07

whitepeacock how is your little girl today?

WhitePeacock · 04/08/2012 20:17

valium thanks so much for asking, she is much better! Texted paediatrician friend (long-suffering lady, gawdblessher) and she said that height/duration of fever not as good indicators of serious illness as wellness in self, running away from wee collection Blush etc so wait till morning. Fever has now broken and dd almost totally back on form. Same alas cannot be said for my boobs but small price to pay [ouch]

Glad to hear that. I bet your boobies are sore, but it helps to know that they are getting the best nutrition there is when they are ill.
