Do I need to take him to the doctors or not?

My 4 yr old has a red sore on his bum cheek. I thought it was either a bite or a 'carpet burn' from a swim slide. Put sudocrem on it, but today it looks very red, about the size of a fifty pence piece, with a yellowy scabbed bit in the middle about the size of a two pence piece. It looks quite dried out and it doesn't hurt, but looks pretty red and I'm thinking it is or has been infected. So put some savlon on it tonight and no jamas
We are off on hols and don't know whether to let doc check it it before we go?
Thinking maybe sitting on it hasn't helped healing process...
What do you think?
