10 year old DD with vaginal pain and itching

Has been going on for about 3 years. Normally happens once every few months but has been happening every night for the past 5 nights.

She describes it as starting with a feeling like she has bubbles inside her and a stomach ache. She then experiences an intense burning/itching sensation which is really quite painful for her. She normally ends up in tears fidgeting about as she can't sit still. She says it sometimes comes in 'waves' but other times it's continuous. The thing I find quite bizzare is that it only really happens late at night and she's often woken up by it.

She normally sits in a warm bath for about 20minutes and it goes but this isn't helping any more. We've been to the doctors a few times, she's been examined once but only externally and the pain is inside. She's been given a course of antibiotics and been prescribed Canesten twice but neither have had any effect.
I've bought her Femfresh to wash with so she's not using any harsh soaps.

We're going back to the doctors tomorrow but i was wondering if anyone had experienced similar or had any idea what it could be?

Candida?

Aftereightsaremine · 10/06/2012 12:34

Is she drinking enough water? Thrush?

Lozario · 10/06/2012 12:35

Could it be this:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proctalgia_fugax%23section_2

(sorry am on phone so can't do a prettier link!)

Housewifefromheaven · 10/06/2012 12:35

Hi my daughter used to suffer with this too. I used sudocrem. She grew out of it :o

Lozario · 10/06/2012 12:36

If that didn't work google: Proctalgia fugax

moogalicious · 10/06/2012 12:43

thread worms? They can enter the vagina and cause intense itching and discomfort late at night.

hairybeast · 10/06/2012 13:07

After she's been prescribed the antibiotics and Canesten for Thrush whichg did nothing to help.

Housewife the pain is inside so would putting cream on the outside help?

Lozario I just googled and spoke to DD and she sid it does sound quite similar, will mention this to docs tomorrow.

Moog, this also sounds like it could be the problem so will also suggest this.

Thanks everyone, no idea why I didn't ask on here sooner! Smile

Vulvitus? Sorry about spelling sure some one will know what I mean Blush think treatment involves some kind of cream though but internally .

kalidasa · 10/06/2012 13:29

I got thrush a lot as a child so it can happen, especially if a bit run down. I used to get cystitis too. Does it hurt when she pees? It can be hard to tell the difference between a sore urethra and a sore vagina as the stinging is so close and the whole area can end up inflamed. Might be worth treating as for cystitis though you'd expect that to last a bit longer. Do prep her carefully for the doctor stuff, I was very distressed by examinations for this sort of thing at her age, especially as it was so sore down there when they did it.

I agree that night-time only sounds worm-related. Hope you sort it out.

Lozario · 11/06/2012 13:08

OP what did the doc say?

loopylou6 · 11/06/2012 15:43

Absolutely bet its thread worms

Mygirls2014 · 05/11/2014 09:50

Dolly790 · 05/09/2018 21:48

My daughter is 9 year old !! She has the same problem !! I don’t know what to do .. it’s getting worse only at night I give her ibuprofen for the pain .. and keep on doing urine test but can’t find the problem

bumblingalongway · 06/09/2018 19:28

Agree with pps threadworms!

t1mum3 · 11/09/2018 10:44

It's worms. For sure.

Vloader1979 · 23/11/2018 23:04

I also believe it’s definitely worms as my daughter suffered exactly the same problem. She gets red and sore below and sometimes cry’s with the pain. This only happened at night which was bazzare . I took her to see the nurse and she said it sound like worms as they come out at night and lay there eggs, she asked me to check my daughters stools closely to see if there were any evidence of any tiny white thread worms.....when I checked my daughters stools I did see lots of white worms . So straight away that confirmed why she was getting the symptoms. So the doctor prescribed her ovex. Or you can buy it over counter .

KATP99 · 21/01/2019 09:34

Hiya, I know it's been a while since your first post but just wondered if you ever found a resolution?
My 9 year old daughter is going through the same thing. She complains of 'itching and hurting' after weeing and this pain can last for 45 mins afterwards. She also gets pretty intensive itching at bedtime and struggles to sleep.
Doctors have checked for UTI and results are negative. The don't think it's thrush and have given a potent steroid to use down there. Nothing seems to help - warm baths, cold packs, emollients. We've tried everything! My DD has had this for 20 days now!

IwillrunIwillfly · 21/01/2019 18:21

Have you tried treating for threadworms?

KATP99 · 21/01/2019 19:02

Didn't think it could be as there's no itching in the bum area and I've seen no sign of worms whatsoever. But maybe worth giving the treatment anyway.

Mandamum73 · 04/03/2019 09:24

Hi my daughter is 9 we have had this problem on and off for the past 3 years it went for around 15 months but is now back with a vengeance we have been to the doctor numerous times and also an emergency doctor visit on New Year’s Eve we have had swabs and urine tests all come back clear!! I’m at my wits end we are up every night around 1am to around 3am it’s not worms the doctor has given us some eczema cream and there is nothing there that looks sore. We went back last Thursday as we are sooo tired and it felt as though I wasn’t being listened too and also the doctor asked My daughter the dreaded question I made it very clear I’m the only one that touches her.. I know they have to ask but this is the 7th time we’ve been it’s not my fault they don’t know what it is!?? It’s so Frustrating

annaspittlehouse · 28/06/2019 11:18

Hi my daughter is suffering with this. Has anybody got a diagnosis and got it sorted please?
She had numerous tests and meds for worms and always negative.
She had an USG and all fine.
The results of a swab came back all fine.
Doctors have no clue what it is and she is in so much pain at night.
Help please.

AuchAyeTheNo · 28/10/2019 23:10

My almost 9 year old has started this.

At the moment it’s intermittent and it’s not a urine or thrush problem. I was however speaking to a GP today who said it could be down to her body preparing itself for periods. I’m not sure how much truth is in this but I guess there’s a possibility

LittleMissMe99 · 31/10/2019 00:56

My first thought was worms

KATP99 · 18/12/2019 00:27

Hi, just wondered how your DDs got on? Did their symptoms subside? My DD9 is still going through exactly the same thing. It's not thrush or worms or a UTI. The doctor says it's possibly lack of oestrogen. But the poor thing has constant itching and burning now.

annaspittlehouse · 02/01/2020 13:14

Hi
An update:
We finally got a diagnosis today! After 5 years of agony, a super senior dermatologist at the oxford university hospital diagnosed our daughter with Lichen Sclerosus. Got a detailed steroid and moisturiser treatment plan that should last for 3 months.
We are so relieved, hope this will help others out there🙏
Happy to answer questions
