DD1, three and a half, has suddenly got very upset about her knee hurting. She was sitting on the sofa and started crying when she stood up. She's fine sitting on my lap but can't put weight on it. I gave her some ibuprofen, she said, 'my knee's better now' but then immediately cried out when she put weight on it again.

I wondered if it was pins and needles but it's been going on a while now. I'm giving it some time and see if I can get her to try standing wihout mentioning it and see if she has forgotten about it.

Also, she has said it a couple of times in the last few days but never with any conviction and has accepted a quick rub and she's fine.

There was an incident on her bike on the weekend but she was with DH so I don't have the details, I think he said she just steered into a wall and bumped her knee. DH doesn't even think it was the same knee. Any ideas what's going on?

If it's causing her distress and has been going on for a while, I'd take her to the doctor.

I've just got an appt for 11.50 so will be taking her, just couldn't think what could have happened?

There's a virus that can do similar in the hip bone. Commonest among small boys aged about 5-7, I think. Might be a similar thing.

Thanks. I took her to the GP. She wouldn't walk from the car to the door, then in the waiting room started tentatively walking on it, then once we were in to see him she could jump and hop on it. Sheesh. Glad she's ok, but so embarrassing to be there saying, 'well an hour ago she wouldn't stop crying'!

I left her at her preschool session running around the playground...

My kids miraculously improve the minute we enter a doctors usually. The cats in on the act too - spent 30 quid taking her to the vet last week due to a REALLY bad limp and she promptly jumped down off the table and whizzed around.

Glad your dd is ok.
