Tonsillitis - safe to mix with others when feeling better but still on medication?

My DD was diagnosed with tonsillitis on Wed and has been quite unwell with it, although seems to have perked up a bit today.

Tomorrow, she has quite an important event to go to and she is really hoping to go as long as she is well enough, and ideally I would want her to go if possible as it could be quite important.

The thing is she will be mixing with about 120-150 other children, and obviously she has been off school since she became unwell including today, but I have had a quick google and have found various suggestions on when a person with tonsillitis stops being contagious ranging from 24 hours after starting antibiotics to 2 weeks after. Tomorrow will be 72 hours after starting the antibiotics and she wont be in very close contact with the other kids, but at the same time i don't want to start an epidemic?! Was wondering if anyone medical had any advice?

I thought antibiotics meant that it'd be bacterial not viral, therefore not contagious? (I may be completely wrong).

I would have thought that if its a secondary thing to a cold or something, and the cold has cleared it'd be fine.

I'm (obviously) not medical - perhaps ask pharmacist or phone doctors and ask,a I know I wouldn't be able to relax and enjoy myself if I was unsure whether DD was passing bugs on.

I guess that makes sense about it being bacterial, so maybe she wouldn't be contagious at all?

I am slightly concerned about her passing it round lots of other people, but also don't want her to miss out on this unless it is really necessary. I will pop into the pharmacy on the way home from work and ask for some advice, thanks.

Bumping this for you because I'd like to know if that is correct or not.

Will you report back?

weirdscience · 20/04/2012 12:03

Thank you!

I will report back, I have a prescription to pick up today anyway, so I will have a word with the pharmacist. I have just read on a child health website that a child would be ok to go back to school after 24 hours on antibiotics, and that it is really most likely to be caught through sharing cutlery, crockery, towels, toothbrushes and kissing...as none of these will be an issue tomorrow, I am assuming as long as DD feels well enough she should be good to go, but I will report back!

Well still no further forward, there was a drama in the chemist with forged methadone prescriptions and 2 guys going mad. Dd is loads better today but I can still see the white patches on her tonsils!

Bumping for you.

(see if anyone can give more useful advice than me!)
